Hacking for Humanity is a hackathon organized by the Taiwan chapter of Girls in Tech, a global nonprofit committed to educating and empowering women in the tech and business worlds. The 2020 Hacking for Humanity in Taiwan focuses on the environment and plans to provide a platform for engineers, designers and business-minded entrepreneurs to brainstorm and build prototypes that can save the environment, be it the expanded use of alternative energy or the reduction of waste.
GIT is a global charity that seeks to eradicate gender disparities in high-tech industries and start-ups by engaging, educating and empowering women who are passionate about technology. From technical courses and leadership boot camps to hackathons and start-up competitions, its mission is to support women entirely with the access and community they need to succeed in tech.
GIT can be found in over 30 countries, including Taiwan.
Hacking for Humanity will focus on creating solutions to environmental issues. The event will kick off with a presentation introducing current challenges and areas that await more attention and solutions. With over 30 participants, and a fair percentage of them engineers, the teams will produce functional prototypes in the second day and be given positive, practical and viable feedback by judges and mentors in relevant industries.
In addition to Hacking for Humanity, Girls In Tech Taiwan has events planned for 2020 to support their mission and provide education to the local tech community. Some major events that will be held this year are as follows:
• Startup Breakthrough Bootcamp: Startup Breakthroughs participants can expect to dive deep into the culture and mindset of an entrepreneur, communication, pitching, startup fundamentals (what questions need to be addressed for an investor), leadership and team, customer-centric products and services, competition, business models, go-to-market strategies, startup finances, and how to raise money.
• Momtrepreneur events: Keynotes and panel discussions for momtrepreneurs, by momtrepreneurs.
• Design Thinking workshops: Creative problem solving and design thinking skills are in popular demand in today’s workforce. Girls in Tech’s Design Thinking Bootcamp is a beginner-level, 2-3 day, hands-on workshop that teaches participants how to methodically innovate. Taught by seasoned subject matter experts, participants are empowered to explore how human-centered design can help create detailed solutions for layered problems in day-to-day life. These skills can be applied to building products or as an active member of the workplace.
• Happy Hour for Remarkable You: An extension activity inspired by the Google initiative "I am Remarkable" that creates a comfortable and intimate environment for girls in tech to train their self-promotion skills.
“Therefore, providing international networking and learning opportunities to our members is a priority to Girls in Tech Taiwan. I have put together an amazing team of inspiring women to help lead and grow this organization and we look forward to welcoming both men and women interested in our events, meetups, and discussions," said Renee YEH the Managing Director of Girls in Tech Taiwan. “These and future GIT events will expose Taiwanese professionals in a variety of careers including, software engineering, marketing, human resources, investments, students, data scientists, start-ups, to gain support internationally and create a community with global mentors.”
