SMILF, which portrays the hopes, struggles and aspirations of a single mother, has earned a great following with its raw appeal. In Season 2, Lucien Spelman, who plays Joe Jr. the son-in-law and antagonist to Rosie O’Donnell’s character Tutu has turned in a noteworthy performance.
Lucien has a reoccurring role across Season 2, and in episode 6 (which premiered on March 3rd and will be available streaming and on-demand afterward) Joe Jr. will be causing more trouble for Tutu that ultimately risks her beloved Southie home.
"I was so honored to be a part of such an extraordinary show as SMILF. Frankie Shaw is breaking barriers in all the right ways, and Rosie O'Donnell is a phenomenon as Tutu. The whole cast is amazing, truly," says Lucien. Of his character Joe Jr. he says, “Joe Jr. is the kind of bad guy who doesn't know he is the bad guy. He’s too dumb to know. It’s this kind of layered writing that really makes SMILF shine, and is so wonderful for an actor to sink his teeth into. And a director like Cate Shortland can really help to peel back those layers in a scene fraught with quiet tension like this.”
Australian director Cate Shortland (Lore, Somersault, Berlin Syndrome) who directed this episode, beat out over seventy directors to helm Marvel’s upcoming Black Widow.
Season 2 of SMILF will see Bridgette discover the downsides of financial assistance while she continues with her day job with her narcissistic boss, Ally. Rafi and Nelson adapt to living together and accept each other. Another highlight of new season is the appearance of guest stars, such as Kevin Bacon, Ally Sheedy, and the one and only, Stormy Daniels.
SMILF is the creation of Frankie Shaw, starring her and Rosie O’Donnell. The main protagonist Bridgette is a smart, single mom making a hard living in South Boston. Her unconventional life and struggles keep getting messier with her impulsive and immature decisions, while she aims to give her son a better life. The series is a semi-autobiographical work of Frankie, who has been hailed as a fresh, original female voice.
Lucien is an experienced hand when it comes to adding his own appeal to any creative work. His most recent other work is an appearance in the upcoming Jungleland directed by Max Winkler (Director of the critically acclaimed Flower, and son of Henry Winkler). Lucien plays a ‘heavy’ - a gangster named Roman, in scenes alongside Charlie Hunam (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim), and BAFTA winner Jack O’Connell (Godless, Trail by Fire, Starred Up).
In his early life, Lucien was a child prodigy classical/flamenco guitarist, born to actress and writer Janeanna Pritchard, and guitarist and novelist, Art Spelman. Lucien toured with his father in the 70s and early 80s and later also trained and worked with the stuntman, Rocky Capella.
More than a performer, Lucien is also a creator. His semi-autobiographical short, Whatever Happened to that Weird Kid? Has won many awards, and he and his wife Isabella Spelman co-directed a music video for Robert Plant’s song, ‘Rainbow’. The music video was personally selected by Robert Plant to represent his song as the Genero spec contest winner in 2015.
