Arms with Ethics aims to stop the illegal flow of guns in the United States

Non-profit looks for new answers to stop gun violence

Miami, FL - In 2017, gun crime in the United States reached its highest level in 20 years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that just under 40,000 people lost their lives due to a gun. Many of the deaths suffered by individuals were due to guns obtained illegally. Arms with Ethics is a non-profit organization aimed at stopping the illegal flow of guns in the United States. Founded in 2014 by journalist Casey Woods, Arms with Ethics’ approach is to focus on elements of the gun violence problem and devise a solution everyone can agree on.

The use of guns in crimes that have been illegally obtained has negatively affected law-abiding gun owners and law enforcement agents. According to research conducted by the University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Police Department in 2016, the groups found that of the almost 900 firearms recovered from crime scenes in 2008, 80 percent of them had been obtained illegally. Other studies around the U.S. are finding similar statistics. Reports indicate over 400,000 guns are stolen in the U.S. each year. Many of these end up being used in crimes.

Arms with Ethics works to prevent gun theft and stolen gun trafficking. The organization wants to eliminate this key source of crime. In addition, Arms with Ethics works with the military community to prevent veteran suicides and to help veterans with post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Woods, a journalist experienced with covering stories around gun crime in Miami, founded Arms with Ethics to make sense of the issues. Woods grew up in Arkansas in a family of avid hunters, but seeing crime caused by gun use as a journalist, influenced her to search for a solution. Woods believes gun violence persists because of the divisions that prevents productive dialogue and action on gun reform of any kind. Even solutions that focus on measures most gun owners agree with cannot be agreed with by all sides.

Arms with Ethics’ projects focus on reducing the illegal flow and unsafe use of guns, while building trust, consensus and leadership on long-term gun violence solutions. For more information on Arms with Ethics, to join the cause, or to donate, please visit http://www.armswithethics.org/.
