Confessions of a Clueless Rebel will bring readers to the post-World War II period, a time when Tom came of age in a rough and tumble working-class neighborhood. His transformative experiences as a youth and young man turned him into the person that he is today. Tom tells his experiences in Catholic seminary training, as the leader of a left-wing college group, as a Peace Corps volunteer in India, as a university teacher, and as a nationally respected policy wonk.
His hilarious, yet compelling journey, took him through several youthful endeavors including working during the graveyard shift in an urban hospital, mentoring poor kids in a troubled neighborhood, and even guarding the city sewers. Readers will also laugh, or perhaps weep, at Tom’s hilarious accounts of his tragic efforts to pursue the Catholic girls during his youth, a futile endeavor fraught with disaster. The book will make readers laugh, shed a tear, and likely reflect on their own paths through life.
Surviving to adulthood, Tom served as acting director of a nationally renowned poverty research institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until his retirement. He also taught social policy and program evaluation courses there for many years. Tom is now a senior emeritus scientist with a long policy and academic career at the local, national and state levels. He is one of the key individuals who helped develop President Bill Clinton’s welfare reform legislation and worked closely on the evolution of our policies toward the disadvantaged in America. Tom has written various reports and articles as well as given on hundreds of talks on social policy, poverty and human services issues.
In 2017, he released Palpable Passions, a novel about two different families whose problems mirror the challenges in the present day. One family is in America, and one is in Afghanistan. Tom brings his intellectual and professional background in Social Welfare as he addresses the trials faced by the characters. Readers will be taken on a journey of achieving their personal passions that may have been denied to them. Palpable Passions shows that individual choices and policy decisions can impact the larger world. Tom is currently working on a sequel to Palpable Passions.
He also collaborates with other writers. His most recent books are Confessions of a Wayward Academic (2018), Tenuous Tendrils (2017), The Boat Captain’s Conundrum (2016) and The Other Side of the World (2011), which he wrote together with Haywood Turrentine, Mary Jo Clark and Michael Simonds.
