Sanders Honored with Conservation Author of the Year Award

SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Illinois Conservation Foundation (ICF) today announced the selection of Lynn Sanders as ICF’s 2017 Conservation Author of the Year for her book Dancing with Tex: The Remarkable Friendship to Save the Whooping Cranes. This touching true-life story about ornithologist George Archibald’s multi-year quest to successfully breed an endangered whooping crane is written as an inspirational conservation story for 6 to 9-year old children and includes educational content.  A new companion teacher's guide was just created.

According to Eric Schenck, ICF Executive Director, Sanders' book fills an important void that must be overcome to get more educators, including home-school educators, to use conservation stories and topics as part of their teaching curriculum.

“We need educational materials that help children better understand the natural world and that make it easy for teachers to talk to their students about important conservation subjects,” Schenck said.  “Lynn does a remarkable job of integrating details about Archibald’s effort to get Tex to lay a fertile egg to save the Whooping Cranes from extinction. The teacher's guide features ready-to-use lesson plans and classroom teaching tips."

Sanders will receive her award at ICF’s “Shoot for the Stars Gala” to be held on September 28 in Geneva, IL. For Gala ticket and sponsorship information, check the ICF website at  www.ilcf.org.
