Wim Wenders new movie submergence stars Hakeemshady Mohamed as a lead antagonist, In a room with no windows on the eastern coast of Africa, an Englishman, James More, is held captive by jihadist fighters.
Thousands of miles away in the Greenland Sea, Danielle Flinders prepares to dive in a submersible to the ocean floor. In their confines, they are drawn back to The Christmas of the previous year, where a chance encounter on a beach in France led to an intense and enduring romance.
The movie “submergence” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10. Hakeemshady Mohamed (Hakeem) was there to support the film along with fellow cast members Celyn Jones, James McAvoy and director Wim Wenders. The production debuted in the Special Presentations section.
“I was honored to play the antagonist role of Amir Yusuf in submergence,” Hakeem stated. “It was a challenging role because he’s a very complex character, cool one minute and crazy the next. I was absolutely honored to work alongside such greats as Alicia Vikander, James McAvoy, and many others. And of course, it was a privilege to be under the direction of Wim Wenders as well. I was happy to be able to attend the premiere and look forward to the next showing too.”
Although Hakeem played the enemy role in a jihadist terrorist hostage situation in the thriller romance, he is far from a villain in real life. A refugee from war-torn Somalia, he has overcome unimaginable obstacles to ultimately pursue an acting career in America.
Submergence is now premiering on to its European premiere at the San Sebastian International Film Festival that takes place September 22-30.
