Australia dominates in the global barley trade. In 2014, Australia exported 6,134 thousand tonnes of barley totaling 1,589 million USD, 7% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 15% of its total barley exports in value terms, accounting for 15% of China's total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Australia was a net exporter of barley. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced.
France and Ukraine were among the other main global suppliers of barley in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Romania (+35% per year) and Argentina (+31% per year). Still, it was Australia that significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
Australia's top 5 trading partners in 2014 were China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, with a combined 19% share of Australia's barley exports. The share of China increased (+2 percentage points), while the share of the Saudi Arabia dropped dramatically (-20 percentage points).
