The Pacific sharpnose shark, like many apex predators in the ocean, is endangered. Now, a new nursery for this shark has been discovered in the waters of the Bay of La Paz, Mexico, and the non-profit research and conservation group, Fins Attached, has launched an IndieGoGo campaign to raise money for the preservation and protection of this important species.
Fins Attached is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 2010 to protect the ocean's apex predators and maintain critical marine ecosystem balance.
The current IndieGoGo campaign, located at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/protect-the-pacific-sharpnose-shark-nursery#/story, will raise funds to help track juvenile sharks to maturity and also track their movements after they leave the nursery environment. Phase one of the project will involve tagging the sharks with internal acoustic transmitters, each costing about $400, and listening to the transmissions with monitoring stations costing about $1,500 each. Additional funds will be used to conduct research, promote conservation and provide education about protecting marine ecosystems.
Fins Attached scientists have more than 20 years of experience in conducting research and helping to protect the environment of the oceans. With the help of scientists and collaborators, Fins Attached, a 100 percent volunteer organization, uses all funds raised to directly benefit projects designed to protect marine ecosystems. With the current IndieGoGo campaign, donors have a chance to help protect an endangered species and encourage birth and growth of new sharks through the current study.
Pledge levels range from $5 to $2000 and perks include t-shirts and participation in shark-research expeditions. For a complete list of all pledge levels and attached perks, see the IndieGoGo page.
