New England Conservatory’s graduation ceremony last week held meaning for many as music students received degrees in all programs from graduate through the doctorate level. The commencement held special significance for young composer Stephanie Ann Boyd, who got to walk across the stage twice that afternoon.
Historically the Donald Martino Award for Excellence in Composition has been awarded to a graduating composer whose work and contribution to the New England Conservatory community have achieved and maintained an extraordinarily high level. Boyd’s music’s recent performances by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the Edelweiss Trio, and international prize-winning violinist Eunae Koh are a small sampling of her recent activities as a composer while a student in the masters composition program at the New England Conservatory, and her work as co-director of the Tuesday Night New Music concert series at the conservatory has brought the series to a new level of recognition in the community and the world of New Music.
The award itself, a cash prize totaling close to $2,000, was established by the friends and family of Donald Martino, a composer who was head of the composition department at the New England Conservatory from 1969-1981. The award commemorates Martino’s important achievements as a composer and his impact on students and colleagues at NEC.
