Independent animation studio Allegra Town has launched their Kickstarter campaign for a brand new animated pilot called RAINCOAT. This Japanese-styled, action/comedy series is about a 12 year old girl named Mercy Hues who inherits an ominous yellow raincoat from her late grandfather, only to discover that the coat possesses magical abilities; transforming her into the masked hero “Raincoat”. Mercy then decides to use her new found powers to become the masked super hero “Raincoat” in an effort to protect her town from inter-dimensional villains. Along for the ride is a cast of misfit characters that range from an ice blasting robot to a grim reaper that lives in the apartment next door. While fast-paced fighting and comical moments make up the show, there will also be a strong focus on morals and the challenges of growing up as a modern day kid.
The Kickstarter campaign, launched on the 15th of June and ending of the 15th of July, is to raise $10,000 for the production of the 11-minute pilot episode. The show will be drawn traditionally by hand, similar in look to the popular series “The Legend of Korra”, while maintaining a quirky humorous tone seen in other shows like “Gravity Falls” and “Adventure Time”. RAINCOAT creator and director Bruce Vernon hopes that the success of this project will mean that more future animators would feel confident in creating unique cartoons that can be shown to the public independently without permission from big studios and focus groups.
