Vitiligo: Overview

Vitiligo is a disease that causes the loss of skin color in patches. Colored areas usually grow over time. The condition can affect the skin on any part of the body. It can also affect the hair and the inside of the mouth.

Usually, hair and skin color are determined by melanin. Vitiligo occurs when cells that produce melanin die or stop functioning. Vitiligo affects people of all skin types, but can be most noticeable in people with darker skin. The condition is not life threatening or contagious. It can be stressful or can make you feel bad about yourself.

Treatment for vitiligo can restore color to the affected skin. But it does not prevent further loss of skin color or recurrence.

Xerostomia is defined as the “complaint of oral dryness”. It can occur due to inadequate salivary secretion secondary to abnormal function of the salivary glands, which is categorized as “true” xerostomia; however, most patients with xerostomia often do not have objective signs of hyposalivation.“Symptomatic” xerostomia or “pseudo” xerostomia refers to oral dryness despite normal salivary gland function.

Patients with xerostomia can have clinical manifestations of difficulty in swallowing, chewing, and/or speaking and can present with a burning mouth, halitosis, altered taste, dry buccal mucosa, glossitis, cracked and peeled lips, oral candidiasis, and dental caries despite good oral hygiene.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE): Overview

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a disorder that includes Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE). A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis. A deep vein thrombosis may occur if the flow of blood slows down in the body’s deep veins. A pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a clot breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs.

The leading risk factor for VTE is long-term hospitalization, and the risk is high in patients with respiratory and circulatory system complications. The most common types of surgery associated with VTE are orthopedic surgeries, especially knee and hip replacements.

Small Fiber Neuropathy (SFN) is a condition that generally affects the nervous system and is marked by severe pain attacks. It occurs when damage to the peripheral nerves predominantly or entirely affects the small myelinated (Aδ) fibers or unmyelinated C fibers thus called as Small Fiber Peripheral Neuropathy. It generally affects the small nerve fibers present in the skin and those responsible to mediate pain and thermal sensation. The specific fiber types involved in this process include both small somatic and autonomic fibers.

Small Fiber Neuropathy Market: Report

SFN is caused by mutations in the SCN9A or SCN10A gene. Both the gene instructs the production of the alpha subunit for the NaV1.7 sodium channel. The SCN9A gene mutations result in NaV1.7 sodium channels that do not close completely when the channel is turned off and many SCN10A gene mutations results in opening of NaV1.8 sodium channels that more easily than usual. This increase in sodium ions enhances transmission of pain signals, causing individuals to be more sensitive to stimulation.

SFN is mainly associated with autoimmune diseases, sodium channel gene variants, diabetes mellitus, and vitamin B12 deficiencies, although in more than one-half of patients no etiology can be identified. Based on these etiologies, it can be divided in to four sub-groups such as Acquired SFN, Hereditary SFN, Syndromic SFN, and Idiopathic SFN.

Small Fiber Neuropathy Market: Symptoms

The symptoms of SFN include bowel problems, urinary issues, rapid heartbeat, abnormal sweating, and dry eyes and mouth. It is generally characterized by severe pain attacks that begin in the feet or hands.

Small Fiber Neuropathy Market: Treatment

There is no cure for SFN. The frequency of SFN is not clearly known and it can vary according to ethnicity and gender. The progressiveness of this disease and its complications cause debilitating effects on the health of patients and impose a significant burden, both economically and on the quality of life. Thus, a lot of research has been done in this space to find the ways to manage the disease. Pain management and other symptomatic therapies are main components of the treatment system for patients with neuropathy. Non-pharmacological therapies such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, acupuncture, physical therapy and massage, and others are also used.

Small Fiber Neuropathy Market: Insights

Head-to-head trials of medications and long-term outcome data for small fiber neuropathies are lacking. When possible, disease-specific treatment guidelines should be selected for management of pain in small fiber neuropathy (e.g., diabetes, HIV, or chemotherapy). At present, therapeutic strategies are largely symptomatic. Three main categories of drugs are most commonly used for treating neuropathic pain: antidepressants, anti-epileptics, and opioids.

Mydriasis is the dilation of the pupil, which may be due to a non-physiological cause such as disease, trauma, drug usage, or physiological pupillary response. A mydriatic is an agent that induces dilation of the pupil; it is routinely used to aid examination of the retina and other deep structures of the eye. In general medical practice, the most frequent indication for pupil dilation is in the screening of diabetic retinopathy followed by macular degeneration.

This condition can be a symptom of an injury to the brain from physical trauma or a stroke and can affect one pupil at a time or both at once. The pupillary dilation pathway is controlled by the iris dilator muscle, which consists of fibers that are oriented radially, and connect the exterior of the iris with the interior. When the dilator muscle contracts, it pulls the interior of the iris outward, thus increasing the size of the pupil. Furthermore, the iris dilator muscle is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, the part of the autonomic nervous system that is involved in arousal, wakefulness, and the fight or flight response.
