Author Russell Griffith Chandler Spreads Compassion and Creativity Through Books and Art in Fort Pierce

Fort Pierce, FL - Russell Griffith Chandler, known by his African name Osamala Kwanzquat, is an author, visual artist, and community supporter who has made it his mission to bring hope, beauty, and awareness to the lives of people in Fort Pierce, Florida. Through his writing and hands-on outreach, Chandler uses storytelling and creativity to encourage connection, offer inspiration, and give back to those in need.

Chandler is the author of three thought-provoking books, each exploring personal experiences, cultural identity, and the world around him. His published works include:

  • Democracy Mutual Aid: A Testimonial – a reflective and deeply human account of everyday life, activism, and care. Read it here

  • The Haunting of the Florida Native – a poetic and emotional journey that explores the soul of Florida through the eyes of someone who lives and breathes its history. Find it here

  • Drag Poetry: Poems From the People – a vibrant collection that celebrates self-expression and voices often overlooked in mainstream culture. Available here

Each book offers readers a chance to step into Chandler’s world—a world where art and writing are used to lift spirits, give voice to local stories, and foster healing in communities often struggling with economic and emotional challenges.

Chandler’s connection to Fort Pierce runs deep. Having grown up in the area and witnessed its changes, he feels a strong responsibility to give back. One of the most heartfelt ways he has done so is by creating and giving away his original artwork to those who may not otherwise have access to it. His free paintings have been distributed to unhoused individuals and local residents in downtown Fort Pierce, particularly near 725 Ave D, where he engages directly with members of the community.

“Art has always been a way for me to express what I feel and see in the world,” Chandler shares. “But more than that, I believe art should be shared—especially with people who might need a reminder that they matter, that someone sees them.”

His work has not gone unnoticed. Community members have responded with gratitude, and many have found comfort and encouragement in both his books and his artwork. Whether offering a canvas to a stranger or a signed copy of his latest release, Chandler sees his creative output as a way to build bridges and spread kindness.

To continue and grow these efforts, Chandler has launched a fundraising campaign to help him secure a trademark for his artistic and literary projects and assist with health-related support. The campaign allows supporters from around the world to take part in this mission.

The goal is to further establish his creative identity while ensuring that he can sustain his outreach efforts in the long term. Chandler views this campaign not just as a step for personal growth, but as an opportunity to continue using art and storytelling to impact others in meaningful ways.

“Whether it's through a painting or a poem, I want people to feel that they are not alone,” he says. “Everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and appreciated.”

Russell Griffith Chandler continues to demonstrate that creativity, when combined with compassion, can be a powerful tool for change. His books, art, and community involvement are rooted in a sincere desire to make the world—starting with Fort Pierce—a more empathetic, vibrant, and connected place.
