Tell us about The Sacrifices Of Superwomen: Natural Remedies To Restore Balance.

In The Sacrifices of Superwomen: Natural Remedies to Restore Balance, I explore the profound challenges faced by women of color as they navigate societal discrimination, single parenting, and daily stressors that lead to diminished self-worth and unhealthy habits—all while embodying the superwoman persona. Using Sojourner Truth as a symbolic thread, I delve into the intertwined issues of racism, gender inequality, stress (including the stress of foods) and their impact on physical and emotional health. Through stories of my patients and my own journey, I show how grief, anxiety, and low self-esteem can manifest as chronic conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, thyroid concerns, and more.

This book is a call to action for reclaiming balance through holistic practices. I share natural remedies, including homeopathy, nutrition, herbal medicine and mindfulness, alongside the healing power of sleep, exercise, and spiritual reflection. Grounded in naturopathic wisdom and my lifelong commitment to social justice, this guide offers women a roadmap to wellness and empowerment.

What inspired you to write The Sacrifices Of Superwomen: Natural Remedies To Restore Balance?

African American women are diagnosed less than Caucasian women with Breast Cancer, yet we die more from it, faster and younger.

We are too often busy taking care of everyone else except ourselves and our stories that create the inflammation that creates disease, any disease, are not heard by the doctors who are supposed to assist us.

I was inspired to write The Sacrifices Of Superwomen to provide information that can assist in understanding how this situation of a lack of self-care and focus was created. Starting with the institution of slavery and accompanying gender inequality, our health could never be a priority.

Preventing dis-ease, through the awareness that we are responsible for our health, recognizing the importance of advocating for ourselves, and allowing women to feel deserving, seen, and heard are other important features of this book.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

In 1976, I received a PhD in Sociology and Criminology from the University of Pennsylvania, with a minor in Racial Prejudice and the Sociology of Law. This degree deepened my understanding of the deep-rooted tentacles of racism and gender inequality, from the institution of slavery to the systemic challenges that persist today—experiences I’ve personally faced since high school.

In 1986, I received a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree from Bastyr University, specializing in Homeopathy, Botanical Medicine, and Nutrition. As the only African American student at the school, I experienced the same “isms.”

Understanding stress, disease progression, the immune system, and the central nervous system, along with my knowledge of the modalities mentioned above, led me to marry the two disciplines to create awareness and offer a naturopathic, practical approach to healing.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

You are more powerful than you could ever imagine—and more than enough.

Take charge of what you feed your body, mind, and soul. You are the temple where Spirit resides.

Wellness is a journey, not a destination. Take baby steps to move towards it and commit to making meaningful changes, even if it’s just one.

Laugh more today than yesterday, and embrace daily joys.

Envision the person you want to become and practice stepping into that version of yourself.

Remember, Doctor means teacher, not God. Take ownership of your health journey and be your own best advocate. If your doctor doesn’t align with your needs, don’t hesitate to find one who does.

Self-love is a must, it's non-negotiable. Treat yourself with gentleness, patience, and unwavering perseverance. Wellness isn’t a dream; it’s a reality waiting for you to claim.
