Woodbridge, VA - September 17, 2024 - Miller & Smith is thrilled to announce that Tonia Crawford, a celebrated local Virginia artist, will be creating a custom mural at the Belmont Bay sales center, located along the picturesque Occoquan River. Titled “Anywhere from Here,” the mural will serve as a visual journey, capturing the essence of the river’s connection to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and the boundless unique opportunities it offers to the residents of Belmont Bay.
The riverfront lifestyle community has long been a cherished community in the Woodbridge area, known for its stunning waterfront views, thriving ecosystem, and proximity to the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. As part of Miller & Smith’s ongoing celebration of their 60th year in business, the mural will reflect the company’s “Art of Home” ethos, which emphasizes the parallels between the personal nature of art and the essence of home.
Crawford, whose work has captivated audiences throughout Virginia, will bring her unique artistic vision to Belmont Bay, through a visual storytelling of what is uniquely possible because of the community’s all-natural amenities. "The idea was to represent that you can go anywhere from Belmont Bay and see and experience all kinds of things you wouldn’t necessarily see here, but they are all entirely possible from this beautiful starting point," says Crawford.
Crawford’s journey as an artist began in an unconventional way, drawing on the walls of her childhood bedroom. "Believe it or not, my mom let me draw on my bedroom walls when I was a kid, which is not very common for parents to do. But it was a great outlet for me, and started a lifelong appreciation for art," Crawford recalled. Despite growing up in an era when pursuing art as a career wasn’t widely encouraged, Crawford followed her passion. She first started working with chalk in her early twenties, creating chalkboards for local breweries. "I've done thousands of chalkboards in the past 10 years, and that's what I do full-time now," Crawford said.
