Thalita Dos Santos leading the Brazilian vitamin industry

By: Jimena Silva

Orlando, FL - Across the globe, the vitamin and nutritional supplement industry boomed during the pandemic. According to surveys carried out by the leading fitness and nutrition magazines, the industry experienced an average growth  of 35% in this sector.

While a vast majority of the economy and various sectors saw unprecedented declines, the industry that sells “good health” grew and expanded.

In Brazil, the center of aesthetic nutrition, leading the early movement to promote vitamins as a key weapon against COVID-19 was Thalita Dos Santos CEO and shareholder of Sunflower Vitamins Ltd. and Gade Nutrition, respectively, two of the largest nutritional supplement brands in Brazil.

“As a nutritionist, I understand that there are seasons when consumers seek out for support to supplement their immune system. May it be during cold weather, when school starts or during flu season, we always see an increase in demand for our products,” shared Dos Santos.

According to the expert, the pandemic represented one of these times but in an extended version, for which she never had a doubt that her sector was going to experience some kind of growth.

“In February 2020 we were already seeing some increased demand in our immune system support products, which was strange since February is generally a low post-Christmas month. But we listened to the market, and we increased orders of ingredients and we simply prepared everything for greater demand.

Dos Santos had no idea that her foresight would put her in the best position to weather and take advantage of the pandemic. Dos Santos is widely credited as the first industry executive to create advertising early in the pandemic promoting her product in response to COVID.

"What we understood was that COVID attacked the immune system, keeping that in mind we understood that a strong immune system was going to be able to counter the the affects of the virus, we never promote our products as cures but rather as support just like food, exercise and a good lifestyle can for the body to better react to viral diseases,” shares Dos Santos.

Dos Santos' ability to position herself at the forefront of the pandemic allowed her to avoid operational closures, lay off staff and suffer the economic scourge that devastated the global economy. Soon the industry caught up with the consumer trend and other brands followed Dos Santos' lead. But dos Santos' early prediction allowed her to be first in line for ingredients, supplies, equipment and transportation methods.

According to a report by TV Globo, by April 2020, Dos Santos had already invested 32% of its capital in ingredients and transportation, taking over 46% of the total market. Her prompt preparation placed her as a leader in the nutraceutical industry in Brazil and throughout Latin America.

Dos Santos credits her success to her formative years as a nutritionist and risk-taking businesswoman. Dos Santos was trained at the Centro Universitário São Camilo and took several business administration courses in the United States and Australia. She comes from a business family dedicated to the aesthetics and nutrition market, as well as having extensively studied FDA standards.

"Thalita is a great example because she started with little and has achieved a lot, she is a leader in the industry because instead of competing, she brings other brands with her and shares her knowledge with other companies in the industry," said Guillerme Maria, owner of Gflow. Vitamins LLC.
