Civilized Hangzhou - Young man offers free haircuts to seniors

Xiao Shen'ao, a 21-year-old young man living in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, has been offering free haircuts to senior citizens at the local Donghe Park since March 2020.

Xiao has been keeping to a strict timetable – arriving at the park before 7 am in summer and 8 am in winter, offering two to three hours of free haircuts, and getting to the barber shop where he works before 10 am.

"The idea was inspired by my boss last March, when the COVID-19 situation improved in Hangzhou but our shop was still struggling," Xiao said.

"I thought it was a great idea, as many seniors aren't picky about their hair and thought it expensive to do a haircut at barber shops. I can also use it as an opportunity to improve my hairdressing skills."

Xiao's haircutting area is quite simple, consisting only of a wooden chair, a hairdressing apron, and several barbers' tools. But despite this, he has been praised by many locals.

"He is such a sweet young man and a good hairdresser," said Li, a woman in her 60s, after finishing her haircut.

Xiao said he enjoyed his life in Hangzhou China, though it was busy.

"I'll keep offering free haircut as long as I have the time and energy," he said.
