Ergonomics International partners Mark Heidebrecht and Sam Bradbury were recently profiled in Thomas Insights. Lindsay Gilder, Associate Editor for Thomas Insights, interviewed the board-certified ergonomists on the importance of employee safety upon returning to work after COVID-19 closures.
The Ergonomics Internationals' Employer Management System (EMS) allows employers to track and document all COVID-related issues within their facility, like installing properly spaced barriers, enforcing social distancing, using PPE, and what the company calls Touchpoint, which schedules and monitors the cleaning of high-touch points throughout a facility. Most recently, Ergonomics International added away-from-work temperature recording to its EMS.
Bradbury anticipates OSHA to release major changes to dictate how employers should coordinate employees who are sick or taking care of sick family members, he also noted that employers need to be actively looking at the issue from a Human Resources (HR) perspective as well. Heidebrecht emphasized that coordinating with HR to communicate with employees is key in making sure staff feel safe during these uncertain times.
"If you're able to document and show what you're doing and then communicate that to the employees, it’s going to improve your culture. It's going to create a safe environment for the employees," noted Heidebrecht.
Both Heidebrecht and Bradbury emphasized the importance of documentation during the return to work after COVID-19 — not only for regulatory purposes but also to build employee trust through increased transparency.
