A Guide to Alloy Metals from Alloy Metals Company

Steel distributors Alloy Metals Company (AMC) have issued a guide to some of the key alloys needed by aerospace, motoring, manufacturing, marine, oil and gas and military industries.

Long Beach based AMC was founded in 2014 and the team have more than 30 years of experience working in the alloy metals field and supplying with a range of products for some key manufacturing procedures.

Stainless steel bars are used for a wide range of different manufacturing processes. The alloy AMS 5659 and AMS 5629 are used for machining tools, motor shafts, fasteners and valves. They are also used for more ornamental pieces, like grills, brackets and base plates.

Stainless steel SS 17-4PH is an alloy that contains chromium, copper and nickel to make it a better quality. This particular alloy is what is used for a lot of household stainless steel utensils and appliances because it is so durable and corrosion resistant. It is also a well-used alloy for aircraft structures and parts, and nuclear waste processing and storage. The specifications of these particular alloys are AMS 5604, AMS 5643.

Titanium is 50% lighter than steel and can withstand heats of up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The alloy AMS 4911 is a type of titanium alloy and is used for a wide variety of applications, including missiles and artillery, ship building, petrochemicals and sports goods.

Ti 6246 is an alpha-beta titanium alloy and is commonly used in the aerospace and motor racing industry for the manufacture of engine parts.

Titanium Ti64 comes in a variety of forms – plates, sheets and bars. They are usually used for cutting down to the size required. The plates are used for high speed jet and aircraft for making moving parts or cutting down for propellers and other thin pieces.  The sheets are used to create a skin on an aircraft or submarine. The bars are used for the aerospace, agriculture, dentistry and the automotive industries. Titanium alloys are used in these industries due to the strength and corrosion resistance. Titanium alloy AMS 4928 is used for wire, forgings and flash welded rings.

9310 steel is an alloy that contains iron, nickel, chromium, and some other elements. This type of material is used for clutch parts, piston pins and shafts and can be bought in plates, sheets and bars, depending on what it is used for. Alloy steels date back to 1865 in Brooklyn, New York when metallurgist Julius Baur patented them.

The nickel alloys AMS 5662, AMS 5663 and AMS 5660 are heat and corrosion and oxidation resistant and is used in aerospace and oil and gas industries.
