Stevensville, Montana - May 1, 2019 - The prevailing scientific worldview known as philosophical materialism asserts that the physical world consists of nothing but matter and its interactions. But this cannot be the whole story. For the physical world is known to behave in a lawful manner, and the laws that govern it, while real enough, are not themselves made of matter. So the strict materialist doctrine is manifestly false. Where then do these non-physical laws of physics come from and why do they have the forms they do?
Such are the questions driving Dr. John Winthrop’s new book, The Principle of True Representation: Mind, Matter and Geometry in a Self-Consistent Universe. The answers to both questions, this book argues, derive from the unification of appearance and reality—i.e., from true representation—a formal operation leading to a general statement of the laws of physics Winthrop calls the Law of Laws. This generalized Law, proceeding from the simple fact that the world exists, yields at once both known and testable new laws, thus bringing the theory as a whole within the scope of scientific method.
The Law of Laws reveals the presence of four extra dimensions, all flat and invisible, giving to the universe a total of eight spacetime dimensions. In the context of this extended spacetime geometry, the solutions to a number of outstanding problems in both quantum theory and cosmology suddenly become available. It exposes as well several errors of fact and interpretation in the foundations of physics and science of mind.
Dr. Winthrop says about his book, “It is unique in the annals of physics and philosophy in that it derives the structure of physical law from the fact that the world exists. Thus, even in physics, the existentialist motto applies: existence precedes essence.”
The book will be of interest to professional workers in physics and neuroscience, as well as to lay readers with a scientific and philosophical bent.
About the author
Born in Chicago in 1938, John T. Winthrop studied x-ray holography and optical self-imaging at the University of Michigan, taking his Ph. D. in physics there in 1966. Now retired, he resides with his wife Riga on a small ranch in western Montana. He is choir director at St. Mary’s Mission Church, Stevensville, MT.
His favorite quote is, “What can be said at all can be said clearly, and what we cannot talk about we must pass over in silence.” -- Ludwig Wittgenstein.
