The UCSD Eyemobile serves as a community health model in overcoming barriers to care for the underserved. It uses the latest technologies including medical records, a dedicated multilingual staff, and student and community volunteers. Their mission is to give young, underserved children the vision they need to succeed in school and life by identifying, treating, and preventing vision disorders.
The Eyemobile provides vision screening at school locations throughout San Diego county. At preschools, there’s an eye examination by an optometrist for children that are referred from vision screening. If glasses are needed, they’re provided at no additional cost and delivered to the preschool location.
Children that are identified as having other serious eye conditions are referred to a pediatric ophthalmologist. The Eyemobile also aims to provide information about eye health and early childhood vision care to families and teachers.
The Eyemobile also serves Borrego Springs Unified School District to help children identify vision disorders. Virginia Miller, Borrego Springs Unified School District School Nurse says, “It works well for me as I do not have a Spot device. Every child gets their device once and I get good data to follow up with eye issues and can explain to parents”.
