Coral Springs, FL - Oct 1, 2018 - Professionals in many fields, and lawyers in particular, are facing a common challenge which, if not addressed adequately, can significantly reduce their quality of life, build up stress and cause negative consequences. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is paramount to success in its totality, but an issue many professionals struggle with today.
Mr. Scott J. Brook, practicing lawyer in South Florida and partner in the Coral Springs law firm of Brodzki Jacobs and Brook, has shared some of his insights into how to achieve the needed golden balance between home and work. These insights are derived from his personal experiences working as a family/divorce lawyer and have shown their utility and positive results in his own personal and professional life.
According to Mr. Brook, the journey to achieving work-life balance begins with intention: “Balance requires intention, practice and the right mindset. We are all out of balance often.”
Setting up a strong intention is half the battle won. We can then proceed to figuring out which area of life requires more balance: for lawyers, common challenges are lack of exercise and personal time, and reducing stress. These issues should be identified and addressed every day, or at least four to five days a week.
Mr. Brook goes on to share seven tips that can be put into practice. Beginning and ending each day with listing and acknowledging at least five things for which one can be grateful brings the needed peace of mind. Setting up schedules for checking emails, limiting your availability by phone after hours, and resolving never to bring work home are some basic boundaries we can create. Not sure whether to attend to your best client’s request that will keep you late at work, or go watch your daughter at her soccer practice? We should learn to say a polite ‘no’ to the client.
There are several other ways to make life easier and less stressful. Exercise should be made into a routine, and friends can help us become more accountable. Quietness can be achieved and critical, nagging voices gotten rid of through meditation, yoga, or writing a journal. Focusing on solutions rather than keeping a complaint and problem-ridden mindset can bring about incredible and unexpected results. Finally, unseen obstacles are always around the corner, so we should stay agile and build contingency plans to work around them.
“You have accomplished great things in your life despite obstacles. Balance is achievable. Just make a new commitment, set your sights and you will achieve the balance you seek,” says Mr. Brook.
Scott J. Brook is founder of Premier Networking Alliance and Project Leadership, and a popular speaker on a range of contemporary topics of interest, such as stress reduction, balance and conflict resolution.
