For the spooky horror month of October, DarkCoast is preparing movie-lovers and horror-fanatics alike with the ultimate bucket list for this Halloween.

Start this Halloween month off right with seven fright-of-their-lives horror films.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, October is the month of Halloween essentials: vampires and zombies, shadow-filled abandoned basements with rusted pipes, and maze-like mansions, all echoing with the screams of deadly spirits.

Ranging from psychological horror-thrillers, to those that have reinvented the ‘70s classic Canadian horror-genre “Canuxploitation” by combining nerve-ending shocks, guts, gore and super-creepy characters, DarkCoast has compiled a list of seven horror essentials – full of chills, jumps, scares and violent galore – to watch this October in preparation for Halloween.

1. Let Her Out (2016) – Directed by Cody Calahan

Let Her Out is a high-concept psychological horror, telling a story of a bike courier who suffers an accident. When she awakes in the hospital to find out that she has a tumor, she discovers the tumor the remnants of her lost twin, who was killed in the womb. As her evil twin fights to get out, Helen (Alanna LeVierge) begins to experience psychotic episodes and random blackouts, becoming a danger to the both herself and the public. 2. The Sublet (2015) – Directed by John Ainslie

 

Ever wondered what it would be like to live inside a real haunted house? As a suspense-driven Canadian thriller, The Sublet tells the story about a family that moves into an eerie sublet apartment. As a new mom, Joanna (Tianna Nori), is left alone to care for her baby while her neglectful husband is working. Left in the apartment alone, Joanna begins to discover that the apartment is haunted.

3. Deep Red – Re-mastered (2018) – Directed by Dario Argento

 

The 2018 re-mastered version of Deep Red (1975) tells the story of a pianist who finds his way in the middle of a complex web of murders trying to solve the crime only to realize the killer is after him. Deep Red is the perfect classic horror crime mystery for this Halloween season.

4. Muse (2017) – Directed by John Burr

 

Muse follows a struggling painter Adam (Riley Egan), who encounters his muse – a mysterious, mythical woman (Elle Evans), who instills career success. As the two fall into a mutual obsession that devolves into a violent nightmare, forcing Adam to ultimately choose between the two most important things – his muse and his morality. As a supernatural horror, MUSE is a great addition to best October bucket list of films to watch this October.

5. Blood Honey (2017) – Directed by Jeff Kopas

 

Suffering a traumatic childhood past, Jenibel Heath (Shenae-Grimes Beech) returns back to her family’s house to help her sister with their ill father. During her visit, she comes face-to-face with her horrifying past, as the line between reality and fantasy begin to blur. As secrets unfold and Jenibel’s mental health deteriorates into hallucinations and breakdowns, her family reunion turns into a living nightmare she cannot escape. 6. Beyond the Door (1974) – Directed by Olividio G. Assonitis and Robert Barrett

Horror history’s most frightening and blood-chilling drama of possession, Beyond the Door is an Italian-American horror that follows of a young woman Jessica Barrett (Juliet Mills), who becomes possessed and pregnant by a demon. With the help from Dimitri (Richard Johnson), her ex-lover, Dimitri comes to her daring rescue. Beyond the Door is the perfect horror film to watch on Halloween if you were wondering what would happen if you were pregnant with the devil’s child.

7. Stranger in the House (2015) – Directed by Devon Dummersall

 

Originally titled The Inherited, Stranger in the House follows Eve (Jenn Liu) and the husband of her dreams Tom (Nathan Darrow), who move back into Tom’s house – the house in which his first wife’s suspicious death.
