USA BEES ARE BUZZING IN 2018 - CANADIAN PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER ‘BLOOD HONEY’ TO STING USA FILM-WATCHERS

BLOOD HONEY // TRICOAST ENTERTAINMENT
TriCoast Entertainment is set to distribute Jeff Kopas and Doug Taylor's elevated, Canadian psychological thriller, 'BLOOD HONEY' on DVD + VOD in late January.

Los Angeles, CA - January 2, 2018 -

You wouldn’t BEElieve the betrayal.

Directed and written by Jeff Kopas (“An Insignificant Harvey”, “Dogasaur”, “The Other Side”), alongside Doug Taylor (“Splice”, “A Christmas Horror Story”, “Darknet”), “BLOOD HONEY” is Kopas’ second feature film, tackling the universal themes evolving around women in jeopardy and mental illnesses – family, guilt, love, and internal struggle of searching for one selves’ true persona.

“BLOOD HONEY” is an elevated, psychological thriller following the story of Jenibel Heath (Shenae Grimes-Beech), a young woman whose fatally ill father brings her back in time to her family’s secluded island lodge where Jenibel’s mother had taken her own life.

Like a film reel on repeat, Jenibel’s return to the island lodge where her mother’s mysterious suicide took place takes her down the rabbit hole of the inescapable memories of her tormented childhood drama begin to blur the line of reality vs. fantasy. The more her family secrets and mysteries unfold, Jenibel’s mental health continues to deteriorate with hallucinations and breakdowns, turning her family reunion into a living nightmare she cannot escape.

Blood Honey is a slow burn thriller told in a fever dream. Kopas, who co-wrote the film with Splice’s Doug Taylor, has cited Rosemary’s Baby and Vertigo as influences for this tension-building psycho-drama, but there is also a strong echo of The Wicker Man (both the original and remake) with the film’s isolated location, odd characters and ties to a more sinister side of the natural world. With a cast boasting Don McKellar and Rosemary Dunsmore, as well as Grimes-Beech, Brown and Bellows, you’ll get your fill of solid Canadian talent. It was also nice to see diversity by the way of Krystal Hope Nausbaum, an actor with Down Syndrome, playing Jenibel’s sister Linda, but her character needed a touch more back story since she creates more questions than mystery,” wrote Cinema Axis.

First released by Canadian film distributor Northern Banner Releasing (a side-arm of Raven Banner Releasing), “BLOOD HONEY” had its world premiere in Toronto during September 2017 at Cineplex Yonge-Dundas. Following, “BLOOD HONEY” had special screenings in Vancouver and Calgary.

Notable in the CW’s revival of TV drama series “90210”, “Degrassi: The Next Generation”, and “Scream 4”, Shenae Grimes-Beech captures the emotional role of women in jeopardy, while shedding light on the psychological tolls one faces when suffering an inescapable type of trauma. Alongside is Jenibel’s father, Marvin Heath, played by Gil Bellows, film-famous for the 1994 classic, “The Shawshank Redemption”, “Unthinkable” with Samuel L. Jackson, and “Unthinkable” with Jennifer Lawrence.

“BLOOD HONEY” demonstrates true Canadian talent with their continued cast and crew, including Kenneth Mitchell (“Star Trek: Discovery” (2017/18 TV series), ABC Family’s “Switched at Birth”, “Jericho”, “The Astronaut Wives Club”), Don McKellar (“The Sensitive Skin”, “Blindness”, director of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”), Morgan Kelly (“A History of Violence”, “Being Erica”, “The Lookout”), Natalie Brown (“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”, “Dawn of the Dead”, “The Strain”), and Rosemary Dunsmore (“Orphan Black”).

“What works here is the vein of mistrust throughout that keeps you guessing, and the constant dysfunction all the characters experience, especially Jenibel’s emotional torment. Plagued with waking dreams, we’re never sure what is real and what is a figment of her imagination, making her quest to fulfill her father’s wishes that much more difficult,” added Cinema Axis.
