After moving to the US at 6 with her mother who had been an anesthesiologist in India, little Amareen Dhaliwal had to switch schools often as her mother continued to search for a stable job and after moving from one state to another for almost six years, Amareen finally found her passion learning more about the human body by reading her mother’s old medical books due to sheer curiosity. Miss Dhaliwal recently shared her inspirational story of her journey that starts from humble beginnings to becoming an entrepreneur and starting college at 15, all the way to attending medical college at 19. Doctor Paul Farmer is her biggest inspiration, because his incredible work in medicine is a testament of how doctors can change the world.
Amareen believes that she inherited her fighting spirit from her granduncle, Bhagat Singh, a freedom fighter in India, she is motivated to serve the society through medicine. Amareen’s interest in medicine developed further when she spent her summer holidays at a hospital, that her extended family owned in India. Observing the doctors inspired her to become a doctor herself one day, a dream that she is currently pursuing at Boston University School of Medicine, majoring in Biochemistry/Cell Biology. Even in the US, she spent time volunteering in cancer and cardiac wards and shadowing doctors to observe and learn from them as much as possible.
A fighter, Miss Dhaliwal is going after her aspirations against all odds and is also actively pursuing her desire of helping others, who are less fortunate, find their calling through positive role models and mentorship. She is currently also working on developing a homeless shelter, the School for Gifted Youth, where homeless children and adolescents will have access to one-on-one tutoring from Harvard students. The shelter is being funded by the profits raised from Arameen’s test-prep company. Amareen’s mother, her driving force had always placed a huge emphasis on polishing Amareen’s artistic talents, which helped her learn several instruments and painting styles.
