With the arrival of warmer weather also comes traditional summer pests such as mosquitoes and ticks. There has been a lot of buzz this year in particular about the prominence of these bugs and the risk for diseases such as West Nile Virus and Lyme disease. It comes as no surprise that homeowners are doing what they can to protect themselves and their families. Kuester Management Group has released a statement to the press highlighting ways that homeowners can be more proactive in warding off these insects and arachnids.
“We’ve had a lot of storms lately, partially due to increasing heat, and this means that mosquitoes are out in full force,” says Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. “In addition, ticks have been more prevalent as well, and this is concerning to many. While there is no way to eliminate risk all together, you can take steps to protect your family and minimize breeding around your home.”
To help control mosquitoes, Kuester encourages homeowners to rid their yard of any standing water following storms and keep their grass and bushes trimmed. Remember that water can collect in children’s toys, flower pots, and decorative lawn items as well as birdbaths and children’s pools. Wipe down these items frequently and try to cover any areas where water may gather and become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
If mosquitoes are especially bad, homeowners may want to consider having their yard treated with an approved insecticide. Wearing insect repellant and light-colored clothing when outdoors can help as well. To prevent mosquitoes from getting indoors, make sure that windows and doors close tightly and have a good seal.
“Some of these same tips can also help deter ticks,” says Kuester. “For example, keeping your grass and bushes trimmed, wearing a repellent, and dressing in light-colored clothing.” It is a good idea to move any seating areas or playsets away from the edge of wooded areas and create a barrier of mulch or gravel. While pets aren’t as likely to attract mosquitoes, ticks can get caught up in their fur. Make sure to check humans and pets for ticks before coming inside.
Know how to properly remove ticks if they are found, and talk to a healthcare provider about what do to if someone is bitten. Antibiotics or other treatment may be necessary.
“One of the best things you can do is stay alert,” says Kuester. “Avoid areas where mosquitoes are most active, and steer clear of heavy brush where both mosquitoes and ticks may be hiding. Wearing repellents and light-weight, light-colored long sleeves and long pants can help keep you protected while outdoors.” The HOA can also talk to its landscaping company about what measures are being taken to prevent and control pests.
