For those along the East and Gulf Coasts, hurricane season runs from June through November. Though it’s been off to a quiet start thus far, there’s no telling what the coming months have in store. Peak hurricane season is mid-August through late October. In a new statement to the press, Kuester Management Group shares tips on how HOA communities and homeowners can prepare for strong storms.
“One of the good things about hurricanes is that they often take several days to develop, meaning we have advanced notice and can prepare ahead of the storm,” says Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. “Pay close attention to the news to see how the storm is moving and whether you are in the direct path and may need to evacuate. Make sure you know the evacuation route for your area and where you should head. Homes can be replaced but lives cannot, so take steps to protect yourself and your family.”
Kuester recommends having emergency kits prepared ahead of time, and periodically checking and restocking to make sure everything is fresh and in working order. Replace flashlight batteries and keep extras on hand. Swap out older gallons of water and canned foods for newer ones so they last longer. Having a small generator can also be useful should the power go out. Keep everything together in one place so it’s easy to access and ready when needed.
Homeowners should also make sure that gutters are cleaned and securely attached to the home. If a storm is approaching, move any outdoor furniture or grills to a safe location so they are not carried off or knocked over by the wind. Strong winds can easily pick up objects and toss them around if they are not properly secured. It can also be a good idea to board up windows with sturdy plywood
During a storm, stay indoors on the ground floor and away from windows. Listen to the radio or television to stay abreast of what’s happening outside. If required to evacuate, move quickly and only take the essentials.
“Proceed with caution after the storm has passed,” says Kuester. “Evaluate any damage to your home and property, but stay away from downed powerlines and other potential hazards. Call the local power company or emergency personnel if you do see a dangerous situation. It can be a good idea to check in on neighbors to ensure they are okay as well. If you see standing water, do not drive through it. Find another route.”
