India dominates in the global fiber crop trade. In 2014, India exported 658 thousand tonnes of fiber crops totaling 199 million USD, 9% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 53% of its total fiber crop exports in value terms, accounting for 31% of China's total imports.

In 2008, India became a net exporter fiber crops. From 2008 to 2014, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was more pronounced, except for 2008 when high export prices made it less notable.

Sri Lanka and Brazil were among the other main global suppliers of fiber crops in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Sri Lanka (+201% per year) and Ecuador (+171% per year). Sri Lanka significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.

In 2014, India's top 5 trading partners were China, Nepal, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea and the U.S., with a combined 80% share of India's fiber crop exports. The share of China increased significantly (+20 percentage points), while the share of Nepal illustrated negative dynamics (-34 percentage points).
