Yoga – an ancient Indian traditional discipline of physical, mental and spiritual nature, aiming at gaining control of body and mind through its various ‘asanas’ and techniques. The effectiveness of Yoga and Ayurveda in providing improved physical health, mental peace and spiritual enhancement is now accepted worldwide. Recently, the U.N declared June 21st World Yoga Day, highlighting its importance, especially in today’s world. To emphasize and celebrate locally, “Yoga and Ayurveda Day”, a community gathering to celebrate yoga and health, was organized by the Indian Association of Western Washington (IAWW) and the Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Medical Clinic (ANMC), Bellevue on June 20th 2015 at the North Bellevue Community Center.
The event featured lectures by expert physicians from Naturopathic, Allopathic and Ayurvedic backgrounds, including Dr. Virender Sodhi, Director ANMC and an internationally acclaimed Ayurvedic and naturopathic physician, Dr. Shailender Sodhi, President AYUSH Herbs and adjunct Faculty member of Bastyr University, Dr. Anju Sodhi, B.A.M.S and expert Aesthetician, Dr. Dhru Dhaval, retired ENT surgeon and a certified Yoga teacher, Dr. Anup Mulakarni, a Naturopathy specialist and Dr. Elena Razmpoosh, an expert Dietician. The event included interactive yoga sessions led by Aadil Palkhiwala, one of the foremost yoga teachers worldwide, certified Shiatsu and Swedish therapist and an expert on holistic healing and Ayurveda.
The event started with free physical exams and blood tests for attendees followed by thelectures from the experts, Yoga sessions and pranayam with Aadil Palkhiwala and Jivan Shakti Kaur, and a “Satvik” lunch for all. The aim behind organizing this event was to help increase awareness of Yoga and Self-care to promote a disease-free society. As explained by Dr. Virender Sodhi, “No government can take care of our health, it is up to us. We have the benefit of these great sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda to help us maintain optimal health and prevent disease. This event was designed to promote a positive and empowering message in our community.”
The event was the perfect opportunity for the attendees to get valuable information about food, body, skin and health from the experts. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of Ayurveda and hands Yoga experience from experts. Bob, an attendee, said, “I really enjoyed the speakers. All of them provided useful and unique information. The food was great and venue was perfect for the event. The yoga sessions, were weaved throughout the day. Were a great opportunity to learn and keep the flow going.”
On this event in collaboration with ANMC, IAWW member Lakshmi Gaur stated “It was a day where the program allowed mind and body to be in unison. Everything in and around the program implicated the respect we have to pay to our bodies; how we shape them and what we put in our bodies. It was a great honor for me to be of some use on such a wonderful day. Again, it was a wonderful partnership and I know this event will continue for years to come as it hasfor the last two decades.”
