Whilst GPS-based location and tracking has been around since the advent of smart phones, there are several limitations to using smart phone GPS, including but not limited to battery drain, a high time-to-fix (time it takes for your phone to be located), and the inability of GPS to work in-doors (GPS needs the open sky to connect to the GPS satellites). In contrast, Network based-ID has zero battery drain, almost instant time-to-fix and works everywhere where there is a Mobile Network signal (even indoors, low floors, high floors etc.).
A lawyer by profession, Kevin Brown also insists that true privacy is ill-served by the approximate 10m accuracy that GPS offers. Mobile Network Location accuracy is based on a range – typically from 50m – 350+m and this means there is no “Big Brother” factor since Follow Us location results are always prefixed with the term “Near …”.
