Borscht Belt Bistro Musical Premieres in South Florida

Written by Caroll Mendelson and Ken Mazur
Escape to the Roaring 20s Through A Musical Journey into the Turbulent Lives of Our American Ancestors

MIAMI – July 24, 2014 – Borscht Belt Bistro will begin its South Florida tour with its premiere on October 22, 2014 – November 9, 2014 at the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center in Boca Raton, Florida, prior to moving onto other South Florida locations before it hits New York City!

Written by award-winning playwrights Carrol Mendelson and Ken Mazur, Borscht Belt Bistro is a heart-warming, comical and touching multigenerational musical romp enlivened by original songs and orchestrations composed by Ken Mazur in the style of the great Broadway shows of the 1950s. It is a classic story of immigrants, their struggle, passion and family.

“It’s really about the history of us all,” said Mendelson. “It’s about our ancestors – Jewish, Irish, Italian and Russian -- and how they came over as immigrants and tried to fit into the new world. It is a timeless tale that remains as topical today as it was to the people that lived it in the 20s.”

Borscht Belt Bistro is told through flashbacks from grandmother to granddaughter and journeys from Russia to Ellis Island to the Catskills in the roaring 1920s. Grandma’s homemade chicken soup is the impetus that allows us to experience the mountains, the Bistro and, along the way, dealing with the Mob.

In addition to the celebrated duo of Carrol Mendelson and Ken Mazur, the production has assembled a top-notch team including veteran theatre professional Fern Katz, who will produce the musical. Artistic director Barry Zieger who has an illustrious background in theatre production, acting, singing and choreography, will direct. Well-known stage manager and director Kevin Dean-Hackett will join the team as stage manager, along with Rene Barrett as general manager. Regular Carrol Mendelson collaborator Joseph Nawy, will serve as associate producer.
