South Bay Educators and Students Celebrate Academic Distinction

Nestor Language Academy and Imperial Beach Charter Recognized as Honor Roll Schools

Two schools in the South Bay Union School District have been recognized as 2016 Honor Roll schools by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Campaign for Business Education and Excellence (CBEE). Nestor Language Academy and Imperial Beach Charter School, were selected among 1,866 publics schools in California to receive this prestigious and honorable distinction.

Educators and administrators at these two schools are wholly focused on student achievement through constant improvement and growth. Teachers work to reduce the gap among student populations by consistently addressing the unique needs of individual students. The two schools were specifically recognized for exemplifying qualities of “Star Schools,” including noteworthy increases in grade-level proficiency of socio-economically disadvantaged students. These schools are lauded for the significant closing of gaps in high performance and high achievement in California’s underserved areas. They have reached incredible milestones towards South Bay’s academic goals. In order to be considered for the Honor Roll, schools must have a strong focus on the STEM disciplines, as well.

This effort to reward higher-performing schools has encouraged better practices for students nationwide. The Honor Roll is an opportunity for business leaders in California to observe real-life educational experiences and opportunities for students. California Honor Roll implements a multi-level statistical method to determine the highest performing schools. Various factors are considered, including achievement and improvement in English, mathematics, and science. By measuring growth in addition to current performance, the ERP and CBEE ensure that Honor Roll schools must not only excel in providing educational opportunities, but also discover new paths to achieving greater success.
