Little Italy in New York to Host Musical Concert Night for Heritage Lovers

It’s known as Little Italy, and will soon be hosting a night to remember. In this historic parish, one can still feel the vibrations of a heritage brought by immigrants who settled around Mulberry Street. Come August 17, and the Shrine of the Most Precious Blood located here will fill up with renewed hope with the help of a musical concert, including songs in Italian, to honor the rich history of the church.

The concert at the Shrine of the Most Precious Blood will be conducted by the music faculty of Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). Part of its faculty outreach program, the concert will raise the much needed funds for the parish initiatives to revitalize and preserve the remaining heritage of Little Italy.

Attendees at the concert will have the pleasure of listening to BMCC’s Dr. Eugenia Oi Yan Yau, soprano, who is a distinguished faculty and chairwoman of the music department. Dr Eugenia hails from a family of artists, and is the founder of Downtown and Select Choir. The concert will also see in action George Dewar, distinguished faculty, artist and author, on cello, and Dr. Howard Meltzer, distinguished faculty member, who has performed with various symphonies, on piano.

The Shrine of the Most Precious Blood and the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral are historical landmarks and beacons for the city’s faithful. Located at the heart of New York, the Cathedral has recently celebrated its bicentennial, and is widely seen as the symbol of religious freedom, peace and harmony, and personal growth.

The parish too has seen its evolution from the 1880s onwards, starting with Italian immigrants, and then playing host to Hispanic and Chinese newcomers. Of late, it is again a center of attraction for residential communities with involvement in the arts and media, as well as the youth. The BMCC too is where ideas, innovation and self-growth are given a nurturing climate, and hosts students from over 155 countries.
