Problem Drinking a Matter of Genetics, Says Chapters Capistrano

According to Chapters Capistrano, an important new study links problem drinking to a certain genetic strand.

In some ways, the line between moderate and excessive drinking is a fine one; at the same time, the difference between the two is all the difference in the world. According to a recent study, however, the reason some people develop drinking problems may have much to do with genetics. The study was recently reported in TIME, and now Chapters Capistrano has weighed in with a statement to the press.

“For a long time there has been debate over whether alcoholism is purely a matter of choice, purely a matter of genetics, or a little of both,” says Mike Shea, the founder of Chapters Capistrano. “This study illuminates the ways in which alcoholism can be traced to genetics—and understanding this is an important first step toward appropriate and effective treatment.”

TIME notes that roughly ten percent of people develop alcohol disorders—and the reason some cannot control their drinking and others can may come down to the presence of a certain genetic strand.

“Previously, scientists at the University of California, San Francisco showed that moderate drinking activates a protein in the brain called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which might protect against drinking too much,” the article explains.

More recent research focuses on what happens when the threshold of excessive drinking is crossed. In studies involving lab mice, excessive alcohol consumption leads to a decrease of that protective protein. “One possible reason for this decline, the scientists discovered, was a corresponding increase in genetic material microRNA, including miR-30a-5p.”

“Though it has not yet been confirmed, there is reason to believe this study with lab mice may have implications for human beings, as well,” remarks Shea. “As the article notes, this could impact the way we think about drug and alcohol rehab.”

If nothing else, Shea says, it underscores the importance of compassion during the recovery process. “Nobody would choose to be an addict,” he stresses. “It is a matter of disease, and a matter of genetics. That’s why it’s important for those who know addicts to treat them with kindness—and for addicts to realize that they cannot simply choose to heal themselves. They need rehabilitation and treatment to overcome their disease, which is what we offer strategies for keeping drinking in check and offer a wide variety of effective alcohol treatment programs at our southern California rehab center.”
