Building on the pioneering work of Dr. Jim Pass, founder of the Astrosociology Research Institute, The Human Initiative was established to address one of the most underexplored dimensions of space exploration: the social one. While extraordinary progress has been made in spacecraft engineering and life-support technology, far less attention has been given to how actual communities will function in extreme, isolated environments.
“Technology may take us into space, but society will decide if we can remain.”
Unlike previous analog missions, which have typically involved small crews and short durations, Constellation Alpha will enable researchers to study how societies rather than mere teams evolve under conditions of sustained isolation. The Human Initiative will soon begin contacting 10s of thousands of potential candidates from across the globe for the program. A myriad of different skills, dispositions, and backgrounds are being carefully considered. Those interested in joining Constellation Alpha will go through a battery of behavioral and intellectual tests to advance to further selection rounds. In Q1 2027 The Human Initiative will commence its first in-person cohort where candidates will be evaluated in person for the first time.
Each phase of the Constellation Alpha programme, from candidate selection and training to operational deployment and post-mission debriefing, will generate invaluable data for the burgeoning field of Astrosociology. Researchers will examine leadership emergence, conflict resolution, cultural formation, and the evolution of collective norms over time. The project’s findings will inform the design of future habitats and governance models for lunar and Martian communities.
“Constellation Alpha is not a simulation for its own sake,” said a THI spokesperson. “It is a controlled act of imagination, an effort to understand what forms of human life are sustainable when everything familiar is stripped away. To survive beyond Earth, we must first learn to build societies that can endure anywhere.”

About The Human Initiative
The Human Initiative is an independent research consortium based in London, dedicated to advancing the study of Astrosociology: the social, cultural, and behavioural dimensions of humanity’s expansion beyond Earth. Through its multidisciplinary work, The Human Initiative seeks to ensure that as humanity ventures outward, it does so with the wisdom to remain human.
