It was no easy feat – but reaching this recent milestone was a testament to this organization’s founders’ determination and passion for the cause they are championing. The Open Book Foundation, the non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the literacy gap amongst low-income elementary schools, is proud to announce that it has recently made it 200,000th book donation to Title I Elementary schools across the U.S.
Commenting on this landmark occasion, Carvent Webb II, Co-Founder and CEO of The Open Book Foundation, said that “We are proud of The Open Book Foundation’s success, and we vow to continue to work hard on our quest to help elementary-aged children get a head start in their education through providing them with the tools they need to succeed – which are none other than books.”
Founders Carvent Webb II, and Ryan Howell Sr. began The Open Book Foundation back in 2011, with a simple, yet profound goal: to do something impactful for their community. Acknowledging the importance of early education in shaping children’s life trajectories, Carvent and Ryan agreed that, by simply helping children read and write better, they could plant the seeds of love for knowledge in their little hearts, that would grow and blossom as they advanced in school.
As a highly successful, two-male, African-American led organization, The Open Book Foundation has managed to surpass all expectations since its 2012 launch, donating over 200,000 new books to an estimated 4000 classrooms across the country within 6 short years. The books donated so far have an estimated retail value of 1.8 million dollars, with the number continuing to rise as new books are being donated by the organization to schools all around the nation on a frequent basis.
The Open Book Foundation runs several programs, including the Authors Den; a National Reading Day program, its Readers For Leaders program, Books For Change, and the Open Book 5K Walk/Run. As part of Books For Change, the Open Book Foundation fosters engagement and charity within school communities, allows participating schools to collect spare change for the purchase of new books, with the Foundation matching the amount of change collected. The Open Book 5K Walk/Run, which is one of the Foundation’s signature events, brings parents and educators together to show support for their schools through participating in a 5K Walk/Run. As a rewards for their commitment and efforts, The Open Book Foundation donates anywhere from 1000-5000 new books to the school library of the top 3 schools with the most registered participating members in the Open Book 5K Walk/Run.
In addition to the aforementioned programs, The Open Book Foundation will be introducing its Read With Me program in 2019, which will emphasize family engagement through a book club.
