Modern-day schools are no longer a place where students come only to learn and teachers come only to teach. Schools are becoming a hub for families and students to receive much-needed resources, guidance, skills, and help in the community. Garden Grove Unified School District has recognized this shift and the needs of their surrounding communities by opening the district’s new Family Resource Center which connects families to important community resources.
Opened in August of 2017, the Family Resource Center provides the community with resources such as health care, homeless education assistance, immigration help, legal advocacy, mental health counseling, and more. Staff working in the center includes people who speak multiple languages and have knowledge of the diverse needs of the community they serve.
The purpose of the Family Resource Center is to attend to families within the district who have needs that go beyond school hours. The Family Resource Center is in place to bring the community together and be a symbol of unity, where families and students know where a safe space is that they can turn to for help.
Some of the community partners serving families at the Family Resource Center are Buena Clinton Family Resource Center, Boys and Girls Club of Garden Grove, Casa de la Familia, Catholic Charities of Orange County, Lestonnac Free Clinic, the Mexican Consulate, Magnolia Park Family Resource Center, the Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance, World Relief Garden Grove, and many others.
The Family Resource Center is located on the Mendenhall Campus, 13611 Clinton Street (Building O) in Garden Grove, adjacent to the Assessment and Registration Center. For more information, call (714) 663-6411.
