Rising Prescription Drug Epidemic Warrants Serious Concern, Says Chapters Capistrano

The drug and alcohol rehabilitation specialists at Chapters Capistrano weigh in on the tragic trend of prescription drug abuse.

According to a recent report from Psych Central, prescription drug abuse has a staggering impact on the general population—and that impact is growing more pronounced and more pervasive all the time. The epidemic of prescription drug abuse is so serious, the report claims, that recently President Obama called for a summit to address the issue, and to seek out solutions; similar endeavors have been undertaken in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the Center for Disease Control notes that drug overdose death rates in the U.S. have tripled since 1990, to a historic rate; more than 36,000 people died of an overdose in 2008 alone, and 14,800 of these deaths were caused by prescription painkillers. Chapters Capistrano has responded to these harrowing facts and figures in a new statement to the press.

“This is truly a public health crisis, and one that is being underreported in the media,” comments Mike Shea, the founder of Chapters Capistrano. “Thousands of Americans die each year from overdosing on drugs, and in many cases the drugs in question are legal narcotics, prescribed by physicians.”

Psych Central cites the work of Dr. Nicholas King, a biomedical ethics professor at McGill University, who “believes that the doubling of prescription painkillers began in the late 80’s and 90’s with doctors pushing drugs like oxycodone to people who did not have serious illnesses like cancer, (which, prior to this time, was the only way to get these strong drugs) but who simply displayed moderate pain.” The article goes on to note that by 2013, Canada and the U.S. consumed 99.9 percent of the world’s hydrocodone, 87.3 percent of its oxycodone, 60.1 percent of its morphine, and close to 52 percent of its methadone.

“A particularly troubling aspect of this public health crisis is that anyone and everyone can be affected,” Shea adds. “Addiction does not discriminate based on age, gender, or affluence.”

The Psych Central article notes that prescription drug abuse is common among people with a personal or family history of drug or alcohol abuse. Teenagers and young adults often abuse prescription drugs, due to peer pressure, and adults over age 65 are also in a high-risk group for prescription drug abuse. “This group is regularly prescribed opiates; often without an in-depth consultation or questions by a doctor,” says the article. “Moreover, these seniors may not realize the effects of taking more than the prescribed amount; thereby, they unintentionally increase their tolerance and overall use.”

Shea concludes: “The good news is that there is always hope for those caught up in this addiction. These medications are powerful, and create long-lasting changes in the brain, and as such long-term intervention is typically required. Recovery options are available from centers like Chapters Capistrano, which offers flexible treatment programs for those dealing with all kinds of addiction.”
