TOMS RIVER, NJ - January 30, 2026 - A new data analysis has identified New Mexico, Nevada, and South Dakota as the states with the highest rates of reported nursing home safety concerns in the U.S.
The study, released today by Beca Life Settlements, analyzed over 338,000 online reviews to create the Senior Care Concern Index. The data reveals a stark divide: families in New Mexico report safety issues—such as falls, bedsores, and neglect—at more than triple the rate of families in Wyoming.
The "Silent Epidemic" of Falls
Beyond state rankings, the report uncovered a critical national trend: Falls account for 39% of all safety-related complaints, nearly double the volume of understaffing (20%) or neglect (18%).
"The complaints expressed in these reviews are troubling warning signs," said Yehuda Tropper, CEO of Beca Life Settlements. "A senior in Wyoming and a senior in New Mexico are having completely different experiences. That gap is too big to ignore."

The "Danger Zone": The western part of the U.S. has the highest rate of safety concerns reported, with an average concern rate of 36.82 complaints per 1,000 reviews.

Researchers identified 11,745 safety-related comments from reviews collected in November 2025, based on keywords related to falls, neglect, understaffing, abuse, cleanliness, theft, bedsores, and other concerns. Washington, D.C. was excluded due to insufficient data.
