Many Americans have a certain, stereotypical image in their heads of what heroin addiction looks like—but often, that image does not jibe with reality. While the popular imagination sees heroin addicts as those who are poor, and typically as men, the reality is that heroin addiction afflicts a wide swathe of people. According to a recent report from CNN, “Today's typical heroin addict starts using at 23, is more likely to live in the affluent suburbs and was likely unwittinglyled to heroin through painkillers prescribed by his or her doctor.” Chapters Capistrano has responded to this eye-opening report in a new statement to the press.
“It may seem like there is a whole world of difference between prescription painkillers and heroin, but in truth they have more in common than you might think,” comments Mike Shea, the founder of Chapters Capistrano. “They’re similar enough that forming a habit of one can often lead to addiction to the other.”
CNN notes that while heroin is illegal and prescription opioids are FDA-approved—and often doctor-recommended—both are derived from poppy plants, both have similar chemical structures, and both have similar effects on the brain.
Says the article, “In any case, the various drugs produce the same result: an increase in pain tolerance and a sense of euphoria, along with drowsiness, occasional nausea and, at higher doses, a slowing of the user's breathing.”
“What all of this means,” says Shea, “Is that using prescription opioids over a period of time can cause you to crave higher doses—or a more powerful substance altogether. Heroin, sadly, can fill this role.”
Most disturbing of all is the reality that heroin is in some ways even easier to obtain than painkillers. “Heroin is usually cheaper than prescription drugs,” reports CNN. “Opiate pain medications cost the uninsured about $1 per milligram; so a 60-milligram pill will cost $60. You can obtain the equivalent amount of heroin for about one-tenth the price.”
Concludes Shea, “This is a troubling link. While it is certainly not true that all painkiller use leads to heroin addiction, or even that all painkiller use is bad, there is always a danger. We encourage those in the grip of addiction to seek help—and Chapters Capistrano stands ready to deliver it.”
