Addressing Industry Challenges Through Collaboration
The team originated from the private domain e-commerce platform project developed by Professor Wang Jinyun of North Minzu University and his students in 2019, which served 20 Ningxia wineries and agriculture-ralated enterprises. Liu Yang, the project leader, was born in Shandong Province, a traditional Chinese wine region. Deeply contemplating the gap between China's long history of winemaking and its modern industry development, and driven by the mission to bring Chinese wine to the world, Liu Yang enrolled at North Minzu University in 2023 and joined Professor Wang Jinyun's research group. At the start of the semester, he accompanied his supervisor on field research to wineries in the Eastern Foothills of Helan Mountains, and quickly assembled Wang Qiming and Yang Wenyue in computer science, Yue Qian in financial management, Xue Yuanyuan and Xu Chuan in accounting, and Pan Jinpeng in law. A second-generation R & D team with passion and interdisciplinary collaboration was formed.
Technology Solutions for Winemaking Challenges
The team's immersion into the industry frontlines was not without challenges. During initial research, winery staff expressed skepticism about the system's stability developed by the student team, questioning: “How can we rely on a student-developed system? We'll still need manual sampling to test physicochemical parameters.” Facing these doubts, team members fortified each other and tackled the difficulties head-on. However, significant discrepancies emerged between the system's preliminary test results and manual detection data, severely undermining team confidence at one point. With Professor Wang Jinyun's steadfast encouragement and guidance, the team repeatedly refined and adjusted model parameters, ultimately achieving precise collection and analysis of four key physicochemical indicators in wine.
Establishing an Industry Benchmark
After three years of dedicated R&D, the team has successfully established China's first integrated digital management platform featuring a comprehensive wine industry knowledge graph, winery MES quality control system, and traceability technology. Deployed across wineries in the Eastern Foothills of Helan Mountains appellation, this platform achieves end-to-end data integration and transparent management from 'vine to glass' throughout the wine production chain. Consumers can now trace the complete journey of every wine bottle, powerfully enhancing the storytelling of Helan Mountain East Foothills wines. Leveraging this platform, the team successfully established the Petit Manseng wine brand, with its price surging from ¥580 to ¥998 per bottle to become the appellation's breakout success. Concurrently, the team has proactively engaged in over 60 academic conferences and industry forums, continuously sharpening their expertise while promoting the digital platform.
Recognition for Innovation
Within just three years, team members have mastered the entire winemaking process, leveraging digital technology to significantly enhance wine quality. To date, the team has published 23 papers in high-impact domestic and international journals, secured 8 software copyrights, and has 14 invention patents under review. In April 2025, following rigorous selection, the team's project emerged as the sole representative from Ningxia institutions at the "Ode to Youth" National University Student Innovation Achievements Exhibition, co-organized by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, and hosted by the National Museum of China. At the exhibition, Advisor Professor Wang Jinyun delivered a detailed briefing to Vice Minister of Education Wu Yan and other officials on the project's implementation and substantive outcomes. Student lead Liu Yang showcased the project's contributions to Ningxia's Helan Mountains East Foothills wine industry, earning high commendation from Vice Minister Wu.
The team's successful practice showcases how young scholars leverage technological innovation to serve national strategies and regional specialty industries, providing an actionable 'youth blueprint' for the digital transformation and high-quality development of traditional winemaking.
