Teen Drinking a Big Concern Over the Holidays, Says Chapters Capistrano

The holiday season brings with it a significant risk of binge drinking, says Chapters Capistrano.

Over the holiday season, many Americans enjoy a few drinks—and in fact, many Americans will consume more alcohol in the coming week than they do normally. Having a few extra drinks is not necessarily problematic, but excessive, or “binge” drinking, certainly can be, especially among teenagers and young people. In a new statement to the press, Chapters Capistrano offers some insights into the problem of holiday binge drinking.

“There is nothing wrong with being festive and enjoying yourself over the holidays,” comments Mike Shea, founder of Chapters Capistrano, which provides drug rehab in San Clemente and the surrounding area. “There is something wrong with cultivating new, dangerous habits that could stay with you for the rest of your life. And there is certainly something worrisome about teens who start drinking over the holidays.”

Medical Xpress confirms this, noting a significant new study. According to the study, teenagers who start down the path of consuming alcohol—even moderate, “seasonal” amounts—might be at a higher risk for binge drinking later in life. Often, drinking habits formed early in life can stay with a person for years, even decades.

Warns the Medical Xpress article, “the perception that binge drinking is something that adolescents are bound to grow out of does not match reality.”

Shea adds his perspective. “Most parents are rightly concerned about teen drinking, but some might be a little more lenient about letting their teens have a drink or two over the holidays. Remember that the drinking habits formed in the adolescent years can prove life-changing—and potentially quite disastrous. Even as you enjoy yourself over the holiday season, then, work to set a good example for the teenagers in your life.”

For those who do struggle with excessive drinking, perhaps as a result of habits formed in adolescence, Shea recommends inpatient recovery. “At Chapters Capistrano, we can provide the kind of expansive, comprehensive mental health services and compassionate support that you need to break the cycle of addiction,” he concludes.
