Schneider Electric and Sense win Partnership of the Year at NECEC's 12th Annual Green Tie Gala Awards

• The two companies announced a partnership in November 2018 to help homeowners make their homes greener, more efficient and wiser

• This partnership won for their leadership and contributions to the region's leading clean energy economy

Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation and Sense, the innovator in home energy monitoring, won the Partnership of the Year award at the Northeast Clean Energy Council's 12th Annual Green Tie Gala Awards based on their work together to accelerate the evolution of the smart home to become an energy-smart home.

Sense and Schneider Electric entered into a partnership in late 2018. Early in 2019, Schneider released its first product based on the partnership, the Wiser Energy Monitor running the Square D edition of the Sense App for electrical distributors and builders. Through this new product, consumers can achieve significant energy savings of up to 20% simply by tracking down "energy hogs" in their homes.

Energy monitoring by itself provides many of these gains, but Sense and Schneider are working with a number of other smart home devices to make energy intelligence a core part of the smart home, including for control and automation. Integrations include IFTT, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Philips Hue lighting, and selected Wemo and TP-Link smart plugs.

"The key to a successful partnership is a common vision and clarity around what each partner can bring to the relationship. In this case, the common vision is that energy systems should become smarter," said Michael Phillips, CEO of Sense. "Consumers want visibility and control of energy in their homes, and we are working with Schneider Electric to make this a default for future homes."

"With climate change one of the most urgent issues of our times, we must recognize that energy use worldwide is a huge industry with significant economic, geopolitical, and environmental problems," said Michael Mahan of Schneider Electric. "Buildings represent approximately 40% of the global energy footprint and half or more of this energy is wasted through a variety of inefficiencies.  The key to addressing this challenge is to embed intelligence directly into a building's energy systems, making it possible to automate improvements, and interacting with consumers to identify and act on energy wasting devices and behaviors."

Triconex and Foxboro user group meetings in Austin for Schneider Electric’s Processes

TÜV Rheinland has certified the automation supplier’s Secure Development Lifecycle process to ISA/IEC 62443-4-1 cybersecurity standards. This was a highlight to this week’s Triconex and Foxboro user group meetings in Austin.

The promise of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is no joke. Whether steel mill or beverage manufacturer or oil refinery, the benefits of connected operations—optimization, efficiency, profitability—are profound. But the threat that connectivity brings with it is no joke either.

“None of this works without cybersecurity. Everything we do, every R&D effort, the first thing we think about, the middle thing we think about, the last thing we think about is cybersecurity,” said Thad Frost, Foxboro DCS leader for Schneider Electric, during a press briefing about distributed control system (DCS) advances. “If cybersecurity breaks down, all this starts circling the drain.”

So cybersecurity was mentioned early and often in many of the discussions this week at Innovation Days, Schneider Electric’s Foxboro and Triconex user group meetings in Austin. The automation and energy management company has taken a leadership position in cybersecurity—highly involved in the development of the ISA/IEC 62443-4-1 cybersecurity standard and applying that experience to how it develops more secure products.

Part of the company’s excitement this week was over the certification it has received from TÜV Rheinland that its global Secure Development Lifecycle (SDL) process complies with ISA/IEC 62443-4-1. Focused on the process requirements for secure product development, Schneider Electric’s SDL practices cover everything from product conception through commercialization, relying on a user-centric approach that ensures everyone involved in the development process is personally responsible for the security of the company’s offerings. The certification warrants that cybersecurity is considered in every phase of the company’s product development process.

“This means that from concept through design, development, delivery, implementation, cybersecurity is considered right through the lifecycle,” says Gary Williams, senior director, cybersecurity services offer leader for Schneider Electric, noting that the certification is a testament to Schneider Electric’s commitment to security.

“The TÜV Rheinland certification shows Schneider Electric’s serious commitment to developing, delivering and maintaining secure products, systems and solutions, from smart homes and cities to the most critical operations,” said Thomas Steffens, regional business segment manager for TÜV Rheinland. “Certifying its SDL process to the ISA/IEC 62443-4-1 standard means Schneider Electric has further strengthened its development process to help its customers avoid and counter cyber risks.”

User responsibility

Though the SDL process is in place to ensure Schneider Electric’s products are as secure as possible, the supplier also emphasized throughout the week the importance of their customers taking the responsible steps necessary to maintain security within their plants.

“Cybersecurity, like safety, is a shared responsibility,” said Andre Ristaino, managing director for ISA Secure, during a panel discussion on cybersecurity. “The standards have 15 sections. Four sections are oriented toward suppliers and what they’re doing to make products secure. Five of them are specific to asset owners.”

As a founding member of the ISA Global Cybersecurity Alliance (GCA), Schneider Electric is adamant about its efforts to get all parts of the ecosystem working to recognize and consistently respond to emerging cyber threats. Launched in July, the alliance brings together end-user companies, technology and system vendors, IT infrastructure vendors, services providers, system integrators, and other organizations. Much of the focus of the alliance is on educating users and driving awareness about cybersecurity, advocating broad adoption of the ISA/IEC 62443 standards.

Williams likes to couch the cybersecurity challenge in terms of poachers and gamekeepers. The poachers are getting much better at what they’re doing. They can attack anybody anywhere. People are the biggest risk in any operation. “No matter what we put in place, there’s a human in there,” he says.

But the more the hackers manage to get through, the more industry can learn about how to better protect their systems. “We’re learning all the time,” Williams said during a cybersecurity panel. “There is no end game to this. The more people test from a poacher perspective, the better gamekeeper I can be.”

Getting people educated is the biggest hurdle to making plants safe, he added. So education is a big focus for Schneider Electric and for the GCA.

An important part of that is educating the workers on the plant floor about how to recognize cybersecurity incidents and how to know what to do in such a case. “They’re the first people that are going to know something is wrong with the plant,” Williams says. “If he’s cyber aware, he’ll stop and think: Could this be a cyber event?”

Plants need standard processes in place for cyber events. “There always a sign that says, ‘In case of fire, do XYZ. Why isn’t there an incident response next to it? Tell people how to do it. Stick it up on the wall,” Williams says. “People are the most valuable assets; they’re also your biggest risk.”

The alliance is progressing well. Announced at the end of July with six founding members, it now has 18. “This alliance not only brings in expertise from operations but also IT,” Williams says. “We already can see the value with different expertise by each one of the parties.”

GCA is still in its formative stages, but the ultimate goal is to be able to share knowledge, expertise, and experience for everyone’s benefit, notes Tom Clary, director of global communications for industrial automation at Schneider Electric.

“Everyone’s around the table. The fact that we started that is huge. I am really looking forward to the future and what we can bring to that,” Williams says. “There’s discussion around the table with peers around industry, and different perspectives help you come up with something that’s ubiquitous and valuable to everybody.”

An important aspect to the alliance, Williams notes, is an acknowledgement that most users work with more than one automation supplier in their plants. “Instead of Schneider Electric looking after Schneider Electric products or Yokogawa looking after Yokogawa products, we will cover cybersecurity holistically to cover all vendors,” he says.

“You guys have two or three members making up your facility,” Williams told a panel audience when speaking further about the alliance. “This is an alliance with the competition removed. We’re measuring cybersecurity for what’s the threat if you integrate two different vendor systems together. It is a paradigm shift. It’s definitely a plus moving forward, and I’m really proud of the fact that we’re working together.”

Four Digital Hospital Trends that Leverage IoT

As populations grow, facilities age and patients demand better service, hospital operations will be pushed to their limits. But there is hope. The Internet of Things (IoT) will enable more efficient operations, satisfied patients, safer healthcare facilities and a truly digital hospital. IoT turns data into action by allowing users to connect devices, collect critical data, analyze, and react using real-time information to enhance performance and prevent losses.

BI Intelligence, a research service of Business Insider, projects the installed base of healthcare IoT devices (excluding wearables like fitness trackers) will grow from 95 million in 2015 to 646 million in 2020.

This growing number of devices is generating a data tidal wave. With the right tools, healthcare facilities will derive insight and take actions based on that data to make better operating and patient care decisions.

What Trends are Driving Digital Hospitals? How will the pairing of IoT devices and the data they produce translate to better healthcare facility operations and patient care? A few trends point the way:

1) Joining the IT and OT worlds to deliver actionable data The IT/OT convergence is when information systems that hold business data and operating systems that manage facilities and equipment combine datasets to drive better decision making and process improvements. “In the past, OT systems largely acted independently of their IT counterparts,” states Warren Rosebraugh, Schneider Electric Healthcare Solution Architect. “What we see now is a rapid switch to a convergence of building systems including HVAC, lighting, energy management and security into a centralized hub — providing facility personnel with more intelligent building data than ever before.” Moorfields Eye Hospital in London is a prime example of IT/OT convergence. The century-old hospital was struggling with an aging infrastructure that was working against them instead of for them. With EcoStruxure for Healthcare, the hospital leveraged IoT to integrate building, power, and security management into one smart, collaborative platform where facility managers can monitor and control opportunities for energy efficiency, improved productivity, and better use of time and resources. With technology on their side, Moorfields could reduce operating costs, spend less time maintaining systems, and ensure power reliability for critical areas such as the operating theaters. Learn more about EcoStruxure for Healthcare at Moorfields.

2) Smarter use of location information to protect people and property Another recent trend is the use of real-time location systems (RTLS). Using RTLS, healthcare facilities can track equipment, patients, and staff to accomplish goals such as:

  • Preventing theft, violence, and infant abduction
  • Right-sizing medical equipment inventory
  • Decrease the amount of time searching for equipment, and thus increase the amount of time spent with patients
  • Using it to understand patient flow patterns.

Moorfields included RTLS in their Schneider Electric EcoStruxure for Healthcare solution to achieve a better understanding of patient flow in the hopes of using the information to reduce wait times. This white paper offers an in-depth look at how RFID and RTLS improve patient safety, satisfaction, and care, all while reducing waste.

3) Providing mobile apps to improve patient satisfaction. Patients expect to be treated with the utmost care while in the hospital. But this extends past clinical care and into their entire experience while in the hospital. For most patients, being in the hospital can be stressful, frustrating, and nerve-wracking because much of their control has been taken away from them. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Using a mobile app, such as EcoStruxure Apps Studio, hospitals can put the control back into their patients’ hands. With a tablet or smartphone, patients can control their room temperature, lighting, and window blinds, access entertainment or patient education portals, order their meals for the day, call the nurse, or even see the noise levels in their room, all from the comfort of their hospital bed. After having a pleasant experience during their hospital stay, patients are more likely to rate the hospital higher on patient satisfaction surveys, such as HCAHPS, refer their friends, or leave positive online reviews.

4) Using predictive analytics to save money. Businesses often cut costs through staff and service reduction. But in a healthcare facility, reducing staff can lead to a decline in the quality of patient care. That makes energy and operational efficiencies better cost-cutting choices. Schneider Electric helped a research lab in Boston, Massachusetts put this idea into action. Through Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Building Advisor’s diagnostics and reporting, several major HVAC problems were found at the lab, including malfunctioning cooling and heating coil valves. The operations team scheduled repairs by prioritizing the most wasteful leaks first. Repairs resulted in $286,000 in annual savings. The building continues to use Building Advisor to discover faults, accelerate retro-commissioning activities, and automate verification of energy investments.

IoT creates communication pathways between operating systems (HVAC, power, lighting, security) and information systems (data centers, networks), and with that comes opportunities, for improved operational efficiency, patient satisfaction, and safety for all. Want to learn more about how IoT delivers better patient care and optimizes healthcare facility operation?

Schneider Electric to Manage Global Leases with Accruent's Lucernex Lease Administration and Accounting Solution

Seeking to Increase Visibility of Lease Portfolio and Assure IFRS Compliance

Accruent, the world's leading provider of intelligent solutions for the built environment, announced today that Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, has selected Lucernex Lease Administration and Accounting to manage its real estate and equipment leases and assure compliance with IFRS 16 lease accounting provisions.

While the world's top 50 leasing markets have seen business volumes increase by 16.6% year-over-year, a December 2018 Deloitte global survey found that only 6% of companies surveyed indicated that they were fully prepared for upcoming changes to lease accounting standards. Adapting to new standards is a challenging task, especially for organizations that engage in many real estate and equipment leasing transactions. Additional challenges arise when companies manage leases on a global scale and must account for different languages and currencies. However, some organizations are taking advantage of the new compliance requirements and making lease management and accounting a strategic part of their business – looking at ways to create processes to generate efficiencies and provide transparency leading to making better decisions and fostering communication across the organization.

Headquartered in Rueil-Malmaison, France, Schneider Electric is a Fortune Global 500 company with annual revenues in excess of $28 Billion, more than 1,000 different sites and various types of operations in more than 100 countries. Because Schneider Electric has a sizeable portfolio of leased equipment and hundreds of real estate leases, the company made the strategic decision to implement a global lease management solution as part of a transition from a variety of information systems to an integrated and agile solution. By implementing a comprehensive lease administration and accounting solution, Schneider is now able to automate workflows, increase visibility of their global lease portfolio, and improve the speed and quality of lease management decisions, whilst seamlessly exchanging data between operational lease management and accounting modules.

Schneider sought a best-in-class cloud-based software that would provide audit trails, meet technical and information security requirements and a software vendor that could deliver a fast, cost-effective implementation. After thorough review, Schneider selected Accruent's Lucernex Lease Administration and Accounting solution.

Accruent's Lucernex Lease Administration and Accounting helps hundreds of companies track their leasing obligations to assure compliance with FASB, IASB and GASB requirements as well as make informed business decisions to maximize the return on lease investments. Accruent's Lucernex software manages both real estate and equipment leases for some of the most recognizable brands in the world.

"Schneider Electric is the leader of the digital transformation of energy management and automation," notes Andrew Schafer, Senior Vice President, International, Accruent. "Their digital transformation will allow them to dedicate more resources to making energy more affordable and reduce the environmental impact of energy usage. We are excited to work with them."

Schneider Electric has announced its collaboration with NetApp to deliver the pre-validated Optimized Edge for NetApp HCI solution

The solution is built on NetApp’s hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform and designed for enterprise, remote/branch offices, and small to medium-sized business spaces.

Optimized Edge for NetApp HCI combines edge-computing infrastructure with an open and scalable on-premise hybrid cloud infrastructure.

The solution is a physical infrastructure solution that is integrated to help organisations reduce deployment time, and minimise on-site and remote management.

“As enterprises transform to meet the needs of today’s digitally-driven world, they need the compute infrastructure necessary to support IoT applications with improved bandwidth, lower latency, and peak performance,” said Jim Simonelli, senior vice president, Emerging Businesses, Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric.

“Together, Schneider Electric and NetApp are innovating the traditional approach to hybrid cloud infrastructure to help businesses drive operational efficiencies, reduce costs, and improve efficiency across the enterprise.”

The company added that the solution offers enterprise-scale hybrid cloud capabilities that go beyond first-generation HCI limitations to help businesses transform their data centres.

“Customers today need capabilities that will simplify infrastructure management and accelerate applications at the edge to unlock the value of their data and provide hybrid, multi-cloud solutions that drive efficiencies and reduce cost,” said Brett Roscoe, vice president, Product Management, Cloud Infrastructure business unit, NetApp.

“NetApp and Schneider Electric are bringing together our technology expertise to deliver optimized edge solutions that go beyond traditional hybrid cloud offerings to empower businesses to achieve new competitive advantages.”

The co-innovated Optimized Edge for NetApp HCI solution allows its customers to run multiple applications with independent scaling of both compute and storage resources.

Until now, Schneider Electric has provided reliable, clean and safe electricity to 36,000 households in 600 villages positively impacting the lives of more than 1, 80,000 beneficiaries under its CSR programme in India.
