October 15, 2018 - Universal Translation Services, a Miami-based industry leader in international language-based services and Certified Translation Services, BBB Accredited and an official member of the American Translators launched a survey asking over 200 translators their professional feedback regarding the use of translation tools and possible outcome these applications might serve in industry. Most of them are free ones, accessible to the public for wide-use, but as the survey stated, there are not entirely without faults.
For this specific survey, the volunteers were asked nine questions regarding the use of translation tools, with the popular ones at the helm. Google translate, Word Translator and SDL Free translation are the primary go-to when assistance is needed for a translation, or just to speed up the process. As per any language, some words don’t have a precise match, and machine translation can be a bit of a blessing in those kinds of moments.
By going through the questionnaire, many pointed out that they have been using tools, but when the translators were asked if they believe that these applications could ever replace them, the majority (around 76%) responded with no. During a contest held in South Korea, 4 humans defeated 3 translations machines (one of which was Google translate) inaccuracy, linguistics, and logic. While the tools managed to finish the job in just a few minutes, they failed in other aspects of it.
During the survey, the translators were asked if they noticed any difference between the tools, to which over 50% pointed out that there isn’t. So, the dispute of our human translators and their machine counterparts is still an unresolved one, as the current market still values a creative touch in the work. Universal Translation Services notes that it is working only with human translators while accepting the use of tools only if it’s required.
