After a 15-year hiatus from Hollywood’s silver screen, Alan Rudolph (‘Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle’, ‘Choose Me’, ‘Afterglow’) has returned with ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’, the late romcom following in Rudolph’s previous cinematic footsteps of a lost in time romance, one that indulges “nostalgic for an unlived past” (Ooi).
Rudolph’s ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’ follows a divorced, former Navy boxing champ now struggling at an insurance company, Ray (Keith Carradine) and Helen (Sondra Locke), a bankrupt, California farmer looking for a bank loan, are both suddenly blessed with the good luck of endless free money, allowing the two to separately fantasize and enjoy their newly improved lives. “His flawed characters reflect this alienation to modernity, fatalistically drawn towards each other in expressionistically empty cities populated only by other luckless, lonely ensemble members,” wrote Ooi. He added, ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’ is “genuinely evocative […and] embodies overwhelming loneliness”, yet Rudolph’s film is far from depressing as the “initial aesthetic is uplifted by constant playful banter and punctuated by moments of euphoric transgression, expressionistically conveyed with flurries of superimposition and sound.”
