Volunteer Organization ‘For Families like Us’ Offers Unique Opportunities to Help Foster Children Live Dignified Lives

Houston, Texas – Volunteer work can make a big difference to the lives of children either moving to or living in foster or kinship care. A newly launched volunteer organization, For Families like Us, now aims to pool together resources, time and financial aid to ensure that children in foster or kinship care get a dignified life and a normal upbringing.

In Texas, each day witnesses a child going through the traumatic experience of relocating to foster or kinship care. Some of these children are recovering from a chaotic situation, while others may lack even the basic necessities of hygiene or clothing. Even when a new home offers a better environment, foster care or kinship children suffer from tremendous stress and low self-esteem.

For Families Like Us maintains a Clothing Closet with clothing and other items of daily use that foster or kinship parents can utilize to take better care of their children. Run by like-minded volunteers, the organization invites contributions such as time, monthly financial support, donations of necessary items, corporate sponsorship, or specific talents to improve the lives of children in foster and kinship care.

Foster and kinship children require greater attention to their requirements given that, on average, they could move seven times by the age of 18 with little belongings. For Families like Us therefore runs several programs where volunteers can contribute in various ways. These include wash and repair, shopping for undergarments and socks, garage sale donation finders, and help with planning or attending fundraising and networking events as a representative. Volunteers can also contribute with spreading the word around, or helping create brochures, newsletter and content.

“We believe that there are needs beside the basics like food and shelter which can help make a child feel normal. Our mission is to provide children in foster and kinship care with clothing and other basic needs. When you make a donation to For Families like us, you transform the life of a child,” said a spokesperson from For Families like Us.

As a new organization, Families like Us welcomes volunteers and contributors of all ages, who can help with donations, participate in our dignity bags and action kids programs or volunteer in our clothing closets.
