Zyrobotics Joins Cohort to Improve Special Education with Ed Tech

Funding and management assistance from NewSchools Venture Fund will fuel Zyrobotics efforts to create exceptional learning tools for PreK-3

Zyrobotics is proud to announce its selection as a member of the 2017 Ignite cohort at NewSchools Venture Fund.

NewSchools works to spur product growth and effectiveness in areas identified by teachers and students as lagging in innovation. Through the Ignite program, they provide grants to promising teams of entrepreneurs and support them through management assistance and a cohort experience.

Zyrobotics is one of the 15 ed tech companies awarded funding through NewSchools Ignite Special Education Challenge. As a  cohort member, Zyrobotics is committed to developing the Zumo Learning System, an innovative  STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)  learning tool, to help millions of students across the country who receive special education services achieve their most ambitious dreams. In addition to the funding, Zyrobotics will receive management assistance and a community of practice from NewSchools.

The Zumo Learning System makes active learning accessible for children with special needs through a variety of accessible STEM-based apps and a plush turtle controller named Zumo. The universality and accessibility of the Zumo Learning System encourage an inclusive learning environment where children of all abilities can reach their academic goals.

“It has been statistically shown that children with special needs take fewer math and science classes,” said Dr. MacCalla. “We want to change that by providing children with different abilities, STEM learning tools that are motivating and engaging.”

“While it may sound obvious that students with disabilities need additional support, few ed tech tools exist to support this diverse group of students,” said Tonika Cheek Clayton, Managing Partner at NewSchools Venture Fund. “We believe ed tech tools have the potential to address many critical needs in special education. That’s why NewSchools Ignite is proud to invest in Zyrobotics to develop engaging tools to reimagine special education learning.
