Diaphragm valves are bidirectional in nature and can be used for on and off throttling valves. It was originally developed for industrial use and with further development it was adapted by the bio-pharmaceutical industry with the use of materials that can sustain any conditions. Technically, there are two main categories of diaphragm valve, one type seals over saddle and the other seals over a seat.
The saddle is the most typical type and the most common in process applications whereas the seat type is more commonly used in slurry applications to minimize blocking issues. Diaphragm valves can be manual or automated. Their application is generally shut-off valves in process systems within various countries. Older generation of these valves is not recommended for regulating & controlling process flows. However, advancements in this area have successfully resolved this problem.
The actuators used in a diaphragm are controlled by various types. For instance, manual pneumatic, hydraulic electric etc., and the most common type used is pneumatic actuators. In this type of valve, air pressure the pilot valve experiences the pressure and in return it raises the diaphragm to open the valve.
