Marriage May Act as a Protective Factor When It Comes to Alcoholism, Reveals Chapters Capistrano

Being married may work in some people's favor when it comes to lowering their risk of alcohol use disorders, says Chapters Capistrano.

Every marriage has its ups and downs, but it turns out that one of the “ups” could be reducing the risk of alcoholism. While genetics do play a role in alcoholism risk, so do environment and social interactions. Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding the positive influence marriage can have on substance use.

“Humans are naturally social beings,” says Mike Shea, co-owner of Chapters Capistrano, a California rehab center. “This can actually work to our advantage and help people to better control their drinking habits and make healthier decisions. While there are no guarantees because addiction does not discriminate, researchers have found that marriage can work as a protective factor for certain couples.”

A recent study looked at data from 3.2 million people born in Sweden between 1960 and 1990. None of the participants had a personal history of alcoholism, and each was single at the start of the study. The results found that there was “a 59 percent drop in alcoholism risk among men and a 73 percent decrease among women” with their first marriage. The study also noted that, “This protective effect marriage seemed to have was significantly strong among both men and women with a family history of alcoholism.”

Though researchers aren’t entirely sure why this true, other studies have shown similar results. Some speculate that people change their drinking habits as their roles in life change, and marriage can be a big change with new responsibilities. However, if a person married someone who had a personal history of alcoholism, it could actually increase their risk of an alcohol use disorder.

“Spouses can play an important role in prevention as well as recovery,” says Shea. “When a client enters treatment, we offer family programs for their loved ones. It helps each member of the family to work through the challenges of addiction and build more supportive, healthier relationships. They learn how to communicate better and establish an environment that is conducive to long-term sobriety and a lifestyle of recovery.”

The study further supports the positive and negative impact of social influences on alcohol use disorders. Spouses can be part of a strong support system and serve as a positive role model for one another.

“Relationships are so important in life,” says Shea. “Who you choose to associate with and spend your time with can have a major impact on your decisions. If you are concerned that your loved one may be struggling with alcoholism, get them the help they need at a comprehensive treatment center like Chapters Capistrano. Recovery is possible and there is hope.”
