Sonya Shaykhoun, a New York lawyer turned film producer, is releasing her short film The Journey Home and has launched an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds for production and distribution. Written during the Doha Film Institute workshop and shaped by well-known Emirati writer Mohammed Hassan Ahmed, this silent film was inspired by real-life events.
The story is set in the Arabian Gulf where a young horsewoman experiences a near-death accident that leaves her in a coma. When she wakes up, she must fight to regain her independence against huge odds. The movie will be filmed in Qatar at stables and a local hospital. The story teaches the lesson that all of life's obstacles can be overcome with grit and courage.
The expenses involved in the production of the film include a hospital room and common room rental, hiring a director of photography, hiring actors and extras, a makeup artist, food and drink as well as fuel during the shooting, costumes, props, music and editing. Once the film is complete, there will also be film festival entrance fees and other costs. While Shaykhoun's first film, Peter Harvard, was filmed on no budget, she hopes to raise funds to make The Journey Home even more rich and compelling.
The Journey Home will attempt to raise enough funds to pay for all costs, but any money raised will be used for the most expensive aspects of filming first. Located at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-journey-home--3/, the IndieGoGo campaign offers pledge levels from $1 to $1,000 and prizes ranging from a "thank you" in the credits to books, CDs, posters and t-shirts. To learn more about the various prizes associated with each pledge level, see the IndieGoGo Page.
