Integrity Home Pro Offers Kitchen Remodel Survival Tips

Integrity Home Pro delivers some advice on how to continue cooking and eating during a kitchen remodel.

Kitchen remodels can be highly advantageous, and exciting to boot. They can also be inconvenient. According to a recent article from Care2.com, the average kitchen remodel lasts a full six weeks—and during that time, families often find themselves without a proper place to prepare meals and to eat. With the kitchen temporarily shut down, maintaining normal family life can be difficult—but in a new statement to the press, Integrity Home Pro offers some survival tips.

“A kitchen remodel may last a couple of days or several weeks, just depending on the scope of the project,” says Danny Peterson, owner of Integrity Home Pro. “The kitchen will likely be shut off for at least part of the remodeling period. Eating out for every meal can grow both tiresome and expensive—so what is a family to do?”

Preparation is the key, Peterson says. “Don’t plan on living off fast food for a month. Plan on continuing to eat at home with your family, and set up a makeshift kitchen space where you can make that happen,” he advises. This makeshift kitchen might be in the basement, garage, or even an extra bedroom or a home office.

“You can use your dining room table or even a card table as a temporary cooking area, so long as you protect it with a piece of plywood and have nearby access to an electrical outlet,” Peterson says. “Also make sure to have a few appliances on hand, like a toaster, a rice cooker, and other small devices to heat up meals.”

Cooking in advance is also recommended. “Make some casseroles, soups, or one-pot meals that you can freeze and then easily heat up, once the remodel begins,” comments Peterson. As for washing dishes, a large laundry or utility sink is ideal; in warm weather, an outside garden hose can be effective.

The Care2.com article, meanwhile, suggests that an attitude adjustment is the most important preparation of all. “Although remodeling tends to be a tense time, try to lighten up, expect the unexpected, and adopt the perspective that the inconvenience will be worth it in the long run.”

“It is worth it,” Peterson agrees. “Remodeling can give you the kitchen of your dreams, and tremendous home value to boot. That’s certainly worth enduring a bit of inconvenience for.”
